BA is back again with another discounted Avios offer, this time in the shape of bonuses, which vary depending on how many Avios you buy.

The promotion runs until 23:59 GMT on Sunday 25 November 2018 and you can receive a bonus of up to 45% on any Purchase or Gift Avios transaction.

The bonus thresholds work out as follows:

Purchase or Gift 1,000 – 15,000 Avios and receive 20% bonus Avios
Purchase or Gift 20,000 – 35,000 Avios and receive 30% bonus Avios
Purchase or Gift 40,000 – 90,000 Avios and receive 35% bonus Avios
Purchase or Gift 100,000 – 200,000 Avios and receive 45% bonus Avios

Note that you may not purchase or gift more than 200,000 Avios, not including the bonus Avios.

Good deal?

If you purchased the maximum possible, you would end up with 290,000 Avios for £3,215:

That works out at a little over 1.1p per Avios, which isn’t terrible. It could make sense to take advantage if you have a relatively high value redemption lined up and need to get your hands on a large amount of Avios quickly. Given the regular Groupon sales and all the other ways to collect Avios for free or at a lower price, I wouldn’t be tempted personally though.

You would need to buy at least 145,000 Avios too in order to get the best price per Point, which is a very hefty amount.

Are you going to stock up on discounted Avios while the bonus is on?

IMO at the lower end of the scale the rates we awful, at the higher end its better but with so many great BA fares coming out at present it makes me wonder if spending large amounts of hard cash on avios a wise decision.

The only pb is that some people buy these without not fully understanding the restrictions that comes with using avios

I have never paid to buy avios .. there are so many ways to collect these in the UK

Sometimes I’m tempted and it seems like it might be worthwhile….I have two BA companion vouchers and ‘only’ 90k avios.”

If you are retired and not earning Avios through business flights or hotel stays, but still earning companion vouchers through Amex spend, then this can make sense. Buy enough Avios to enable you to book a business class long-haul flight and get another “free” with your voucher, then this begins to appeal. Two flights for the price of the Avios.
