28 (or 50) Ways to Annoy Your Already-Suffering Customers (Marriott Sweepstakes Fail)

The pun/headline almost wrote itself…  Just a few days after I wrote about Marriott’s new sweepstakes going live, it has become increasingly obvious that Marriott have shot themselves in the foot (again).

Most, if not all, Marriott Rewards members are reporting that you can only win a daily prize once. So, if your account has seen this…

Then for the remaining 28 days of the sweepstakes you’ll see this…

Considering that there is only one grand prize – consisting of a 2-night stay at each brand (another odd prize, since most people don’t like to switch hotels during longer holidays, and 29 weekends is a lot of travelling) – this is a very poor incentive to continue participating. Moreover, if the terms of the sweepstakes had been made clear, people might have strategically decided to play on, say, Day 20, to increase their notional chances of winning one of the larger daily prizes.

I really don’t know what Marriott were thinking (if they were indeed thinking and not focusing on justifying the merger’s 99.9% success rate… ), but with roughly 85,000 daily prizes to give away, it seems counter-productive to exclude their most loyal and engaged customers. Unless the entire objective was to appear generous, but not actually provide many of the costlier prizes…

So… unless the promotion is “fixed”, you might as well stop playing once you’ve earned your massive bonus of 50 points…
