American Express has confirmed that the popular British Airways 2-4-1 Companion Vouchers earned through spending on its BA credit cards are being extended by 6 months.

The Companion Voucher extensions will work as follows:

Already got a 2-4-1 voucher

“If you already have a Companion Voucher(s) in your British Airways Executive Club, this extension has automatically been applied. You can view any existing vouchers you may have by logging into your Executive Club Account here.”

Intending to trigger a 2-4-1 voucher soon

“If you haven’t yet earned your Companion Voucher but do so between now and 30 June 2020, British Airways will automatically extend your expiration date by six-months in addition to the original validity. To view your spend tracker and see how close you are to earning your Companion Voucher, please log in to your American Express Account via desktop or App and view the Membership section.”

Conclusion

It is currently impossible to say when flying will become desirable (or even possible to many destinations) again, so it is good to see Amex and British Airways proactively offering this 6 month extension.

Should further extensions be required once the medium-term state of the aviation industry has become clearer, I would expect to see a similarly reasonable approach.

It will be interesting to see how BA / Amex deal with 2-4-1 companion vouchers which will be ‘unused’ for flights which are scheduled for the summer (holidays) when the likelihood is that the flight itself will be cancelled.
The companion voucher gets credited back into your BAEC account but then what will be the new expiry date ??
