This is descending into farce… but Groupon is back again this weekend…
The offer, as always, comes from the Spanish version of Groupon and the Avios are sent to an Iberia Plus account. From there, you can Combine Your Avios to send them over to British Airways if you prefer.
The price per Avios is the same as usual:
- 2,000 Avios for 19 euros (0.95 euro cents apiece)
- 4,000 Avios for 59 euros (1.48 euro cents apiece)
- 8,000 Avios for 99 euros (1.24 euro cents apiece)
- 15,000 Avios for 189 euros (1.26 euro cents apiece)
- 20,000 Avios for 249 euros (1.25 euro cents apiece)
- 34,000 Avios for 429 euros (1.26 euro cents apiece)
You are allowed to buy 1 of the 2,000 Avios packs, and 5 of the 4, 20 and 34K packs and 10 of the 8K / 15K packs. (way too complicated for me but if you need loads of Avios you can obviously get them…)
Here is the direct link for the Groupon offer, although you don’t want to use it…
You want to go to the Iberia website and set your country settings to Spain in the top left-hand corner. Then you want to visit the IberiaPluStore. (which works exactly like your usual cashback or airline shopping portals) There you will find Groupon as one of the options, offering 11 Avios per euro spent (until 30 June, 2018). I need to add a YMMV here because lately I haven’t been receiving the full 11 Avios per euro.
When you arrive to Groupon, you might see that everything is sold out. This is because the landing page hasn’t been updated. Simply set your city to Madrid and type Avios in the search bar; that should take you to the current offer.
If this is your first time using Groupon in Spain, you might be able to obtain a 25% discount by using the discount code: VIVEGRPN Again, YMMV since this code hasn’t always worked properly.
So… if you buy a 2,000 Avios pack (without discount), you will also earn up to 209 Avios extra via the IberiaPluStore. 2,209 Avios for 19 euros (£16.50) works out to 0.75p per Avios.
Paying with PayPal should also help avoid any issues with the registered address on your credit card.
Once you have managed to purchase a Groupon voucher, you will need to exchange it for your Avios. The voucher expires on 10 May, 2018 so you need to do it straight away. I explained how to do it in this post, which you can read by clicking here. However, it is worth mentioning that the PDF you’ll receive from Groupon has an incorrect link (enlace) for converting your Groupon voucher into Avios. The link you really need is this one – https://ticket.groupon.es/ticket_es/iberia/
The 2,000 Avios packages tend to sell very quickly. So you’d better get a move on if you want to take advantage…
Puntos Viajeros says
The Groupon Avios deal, does not accept anymore any kind of vouchers, unfortunately. Also it seems that this time there´s a problem with the voucher-validation process… their IT is not working (crap).
Craig Sowerby says
Yeah, I can’t seem to convert my voucher either. Thanks for the info about the discount codes no longer working…
hamiltus says
Same here. Cannot redeem the voucher. Shoddy Groupon IT raises it’s ugly head again
Alex says
Do it on your own risk of course.
I tried it once for minimum amount to see if it works, it worked until the point of selling the groupon.
Whe I tried to redeem however it first produced an error that groupon cannot be validated. When I tried second time it advised that groupon have already been used.
I can only offer EUR 19 spent as a price I have paid to remind myself that whoever tries to go around terms and conditions, specifically around country restriction, DOES SO ON HIS/HER own risk.
Craig Sowerby says
Sorry to hear that it didn’t work for you in the past. It’s repeatedly worked fine for me and many readers, although occasionally with IT problems that eventually get sorted out.
Considering that Groupon posted a Youtube video with English subtitles, I don’t suppose that they are really all that concerned about international purchases.
WALDEMAR says
same story. cannot validate I hope they will sort it out tomorrow,
Craig Sowerby says
It’s a bank holiday weekend in Spain, so they are probably lying on the beach until Wednesday.
hamiltus says
Managed to finally redeem my voucher. Manually typed in the Iberia specific redemption URL and no loopbacks ?
Just another kink in their systems I guess ?
Beppo says
can’t validate either, feeling relieved I am not alone.
Leonidas Souliotis says
Unfortunately, I cannot even open the offer! Either on Groupon link or from the IberiaPlus store 🙁
Craig Sowerby says
It is sold out. It appears that these offers might come more frequently but only last for a day or two…
