We have been making rather a lot of your current ability to earn Avios at Sainsburys, via Nectar. However, as you may recall, the “Avios supermarket” was historically Tesco, via Clubcard. As a result, today we go a little nostalgic and look at how you can currently earn 8.4 Avios (or 8 pence in hard cash) for every £1 you spend in-store at Tesco.
But hurry… This offer starts today and runs till the end of 25 April.
Tesco cashback or Avios in-store
To benefit from this offer, you simply need to register a card via TopCashback here. Then, whenever you shop in Tesco and pay with that card during the offer period, you’ll get the 8% cashback.
Once your card is registered, you need to activate the offer.
Cashback earned at Topcashback can be cashed out as cash (obviously), or to Avios with a 5% bonus based on a penny valuation of Avios, so you’ll get 1.05 Avios for every penny you cash out that way.
If you aren’t a TopCashback member yet, you can get a bonus £10 for signing up here.
But we’re all shopping at Sainsburys now
Yes, stop. At least until 25 April.
To give a direct example here, you earn 1 Nectar point worth 0.5p (in Sainsburys/Argos/ebay/M&S credit) per £1 spent at Sainsburys, which can alternatively be converted to 0.625 Avios. With this offer, you are earning 8p in hard cash, or 8.4 Avios per £1 spent at Tesco. I don’t need to point out that this is a much, much better deal.
Some key points
There are some very important points you need to be aware of for this promotion. You can read them all here, but the key ones are as follows:
- Maximum £15 cashback per transaction.
- Maximum 1 transaction per day per member.
- Only purchases made during the offer period between 14 April 2021 and 25 April 2021 at 23:59 are eligible for cashback.
- Only purchases made on a registered Mastercard or Visa will qualify for cashback.
Note also that this is in-store only. It does not apply to online Tesco purchases (however, see below).
Anything else?
Yes. If you want a rebate on your online spend with Tesco, new “Click and Collect” customers will get £8.25 cashback (or 866 Avios) on a £25+ spend.
Sumner’s Final Thought
This is a great deal, although clearly quite limited in the timescale. I strongly suggest that now is the time to do any longer-term Tesco shopping… if you can now tear yourself away from Sainsburys.

A shame these don’t work for online groceries. Still trying to stay out of shops as much as possible.

Yes, but have a look at my option for Click and Collect.
