Hi would love to get some advice. when booking a holiday to a destination that is in low season (for example Oman in full summer) when is best time to book to get the lower prices? early or last minute? thanks x
Hi Francis - welcome to InsideFlyer! Unfortunately the only honest answer is, "it depends...". Things vary so much, not just by destination, but by company (or even by management/market conditions - just because something is available one year doesn't mean it will be next time). Broadly speaking though, the best strategy if you want a particular hotel is to book early on a flexible rate (unless the non-refundable rate is already very good) and then keep an eye on the price as the time gets closer - rebooking whenever it's cheaper. If you're more flexible about where you stay, you can use the same technique but look at other hotels too. Consider options like Airbnb and other rental sites too. Personally, I use the the 'full bag of tricks' (best rate guarantees, using/earning Points, discount rates, cashback promos, etc) to keep prices down, but obviously not everyone has the time/inclination to do that. As regards flights, it's the same story really - you never really know if there's going to be a great sale at the last minute or something. One of the key advantages of using airline miles is that you can usually cancel for a small fee and book using cash instead, if an amazing deal crops up. Ultimately, these things are all about 'value' and that's a very subjective thing, so the real trick is simply to decide whether you're happy with a price or not. It may or may not be the very cheapest, but as long as you are comfortable with it, you can get on and enjoy your travels!
Yikes... it is H-O-T!! in that part of the world in summer. But if you are inclined to put in the effort, it is relatively straightforward to do Best Rate Guarantees as your travel date approaches. Lots of unsold inventory as it is somewhere most people simply don't want to be in the summer... Book flexible, and keep checking every once in awhile.
great thanks for the help. yes i think it will be too hot, just that there were 2 hotels i really wanna try and for obvious reason are much cheaper in full summer. am i right in saying Best Rate Guarantees has to be done in 1st 24 hours after booking original booking? thanks Francis
Yes, but with flexible rates it doesn't matter. Make a flexible booking that you'll keep in reserve. If you find a BRG, then you make a new booking and attempt the BRG claim. If successful, you cancel the first reservation that you no longer need...
If you are keen on the Middle East, I would recommend avoiding it in the peak of summer, as honestly, there is little to be done except being in your hotel or in a mall (spoken from experience). Unless, you enjoy feeling like you're on the surface of the sun!
