The Iberia Plus / Groupon Offer is Back Again for Black Friday!

One of our favourite offers is back! Just in time for Black Friday.

You’re going to need some Spanish language skills though – or a web browser that can translate for you. But you should be able to purchase some Avios at a decent price. The offer comes from the Spanish version of Groupon and the Avios are sent to an Iberia Plus account.

It is easy enough to sign up for a Spanish Groupon account – if not resident in Spain just choose your favourite hotel and use their address.

The price per Avios jumps around a bit:

  • 2,000 Avios for 19 euros (0.95 euro cents apiece)
  • 4,000 Avios for 59 euros (1.48 euro cents apiece)
  • 8,000 Avios for 99 euros (1.24 euro cents apiece)
  • 15,000 Avios for 189 euros (1.26 euro cents apiece)
  • 20,000 Avios for 249 euros (1.25 euro cents apiece)
  • 34,000 Avios for 429 euros (1.26 euro cents apiece)

You are allowed to buy 1 of the 2,000 Avios packs, 5 of the 34,000 Avios packs and 10 of the 8,000 or 15,000 packs. That’s far too much math for me in order to calculate the maximum, but I suspect you could buy over 300,000 Avios if you wanted to.

Here is the direct link for the Groupon offer, although you don’t want to use it…

You want to go to the Iberia website and set your country settings to Spain in the top left-hand corner. Then you want to visit the IberiaPluStore. (which works exactly like your usual cashback or airline shopping portals) There you will find Groupon as one of the options, offering 9 Avios per euro spent (until 30 November, 2017). Once in Groupon, you need to set your city to Madrid and search for Avios. Confusing? Perhaps this isn’t a travel hack for your grandmother… but it’s still free extra Avios…

So… if you buy a 2,000 Avios pack, you will also earn 171 Avios extra via the IberiaPluStore. 2,171 Avios for 19 euros (£17) works out to 0.78p per Avios.

Paying with PayPal should also help avoid any issues with the registered address on your credit card.

The 2,000 Avios packages tend to sell very quickly. So you’d better get a move on if you want to take advantage…

Hi.. I’m a newcomer of four weeks collecting rewards and points but thanks to the excellent information and advice from your good self (and the HfP website) I’ve plunged right in and now have three Amex cards, and avios accounts with Avios, BAEC, and IberiaPlus. I’ve ordered 2000 avios from Groupon Spain following your rent article and applied them to IberiaPlus. My wife did the same for an account she also opened with them. Problem is the avios points have not get appeared on our recently opened IberiaPlus accounts. It’s only five days since we ordered them but is that usual? If we didn’t follow the process properly my fear is we’ll hear nothing until it’s too late and may lose them altogether. Do I need more patience?! Thanks.

I seem to recall this posting fairly quickly last time. But they’ve not shown up in my Iberia account yet.

    Am I being too impatient?

Patience is a virtue gentlemen, especially with Iberia Plus! 🙂

I haven’t received the latest 2,000 Avios either, but it can take 2-3 weeks. More importantly, I didn’t receive an email confirming my IberiaPluStore purchase had tracked, so I’ll have to look for those extra 171 Avios (which always take at least 2-3 months to arrive)

Save for me! They kept saying:

We are sorry to let you know that your missing Avios request cannot be processed as mentioned on the Purchase Conditions of Groupon on IberiaPluStore:

*No ofrecemos los 2.000, 4.000, 8.000, 12.000 o 20.000 Avios que usted compre a través de las Promociones “Avios en Iberia Plus”.
        * We do not offer the 2,000 , 4,000 , 8,000 , 12,000 or 20,000 Avios that you might buy through any “Avios en Iberia Plus” promotions.
        * We do not accept missing transaction claims or questions about the 2,000 , 4,000 , 8,000 , 12,000 or 20,000 Avios that you might buy through “Avios en Iberia Plus” promotions.

However I don’t think this is related to the bonus points (9 Avios per 1 euro) at all. I think these two terms here only imply one can’t claim the Groupon Avios through Iberia Plus Store should there be any problem with Groupon crediting the purchased Avios. Also there is another term on Iberia Plus Groupon page:

*Usted recibirá una recompensa menor que la mencionada al comprar bonos de 2.000, 4.000, 8.000, 12.000 o 20.000 Avios (o de cualquier cantidad de Avios).
*You will receive a lower reward than the aforementioned when buying deals of 2,000, 4,000, 8,000, 12,000 or 20,000 Avios (or any amount of Avios).

So genuinely I think we are qualified for the plus store bonus, no matter whether it’s 9 Avios per 1 euro or not….. I’m very annoyed by plus store customer service, especially I can’t speak Spanish which makes it harder to argue…

        • Craig Sowerby says

I do speak Spanish and I agree with you 100%. I don’t think that legalese really means that there is no cashback / Avios back when buying an Avios package from Groupon. (they want to avoid people chasing the 2,000 Avios IMO) But it’s excruciatingly hard to convince an agent about it.

I had a same sort of issue with a Hilton hotel in Colombia. The Hilton in Cartagena was excluded by the cashback website. I stayed at the Hampton. But more than one agent replied that “Hampton by Hilton” meant Hilton. Nobody cared that there was a Hilton hotel in Cartagena and a Hampton hotel as well and that these were two very different brands. I asked them to update their T&Cs to also exclude the Hampton… but they wouldn’t do that either!
