Iberia Plus have announced a flash sale for those interested in buying Avios. Between now and 1 June, 2017, you will receive a 50% bonus when buying Avios.

Iberia Plus prices Avios somewhat randomly but, for the cheapest price, you need to buy 100,000 Avios for a total cost of 1,800 euros. You will actually receive 150,000 Avios with the bonus. If you don’t need so many Avios, you can find the full price list here.

Thanks to the bonus, you end up paying at least 1.2 euro cents, or roughly 1.05p per Avios.

As always, you can Combine Your Avios to move them to British Airways Executive Club or Avios.com (i.e. Aer Lingus)

Is this a good deal? Well, it depends on whether you have an imminent reward in mind or some companion vouchers to use. I certainly wouldn’t speculatively buy Avios at this price but I know that it must be tempting to some…

A timely cash-flow boost for IAG in anticipation of a monumental EU261/2004 payout for BA?
    Cynical? Me?

    This works for me.
I have a soon-to-expire 2for1 voucher and I need to top up by about 30k Avios. Not ideal, but definitely a saving.

Cheers Gnarly. Gives me the germ of an idea for some analysis / blog post…

Using a 2-for-1 already requires departing the UK (which apart from Inverness involves APD). It also involves flying on BA metal, which has those lovely surcharges which you can’t reduce if your itinerary must depart the UK. And if people then feel obliged to buy Avios in order to use an expiring 2-for-1… somewhere in there the customer ends up paying in the thousands per person (especially once the Amex annual fee is included and I won’t even get started on the opportunity cost of a cashback credit card)…

Compare that to just buying Lifemiles or Alaska or AA miles during a promo (or SPG), and just booking a no-surcharge reward. Perhaps some people have a mental block against that, but it seems so much easier to me…

Great point and definitely a good idea for an article. I’ve never bothered to crunch the numbers properly, but my instinct is that a lot of people may be surprised by the result…

Hopefully once I’ve finished my flat move and can get back to my obsession with travel hacking… 🙂

Of course, BA are never going to take me on a PR jolly with all of my “be smart and avoid BA” posts…
