While the benefits of the Amex Gold charge card are well known, what is less common knowledge is that when you possess one, you are also entitled to apply for the Amex Gold credit card. Frankly, there’s not a great deal of point in holding this card, as it makes more sense for your spend to go through the charge card.
BUT there is one clear exemption to this…
The Amex Gold credit card bonus
If you apply for the Amex Gold credit card now, you will receive 5,000 bonus Membership Rewards (convertible to various other loyalty points, including 3,000 Avios) when you spend £500 on it in the first 3 months.
That is as generous as I’ve ever seen it. When I signed up a few months ago, it was just 3,000 MR points.
So, if you’ve not already got the Amex Gold charge card, there’s a potentially very lucrative points-earning opportunity for you – the bonus 22,000 points for the Amex Gold charge card, followed by the bonus 5,000 points for the credit card.

Would having this extra card stop you getting a more lucrative amex if your gold was still running?
Yes there’s supposedly a theoretical limit – I think it’s 2 personal credit cards (but the Gold/Plat Charge Cards don’t count as credit cards so are in addition to the 2). I’ve regularly had BA and SPG Amex credit cards at the same as having a Gold or Plat – but obviously this is a credit card so would likely count. How strictly Amex enforce the limit is an interesting question – I certainly know people who have had Nectar, BA and SPG at the same time, so there appears to be a bit of flexibility.
Is there anything similar if you hold the Amex Platinum charge card?
There’s the Platinum Credit Card earning MR points too. Only available to Plat Charge Card holders, via a private link, but only sometimes has a bonus for taking it out. Make sure you’re opted into the Amex promotional and marketing emails, they send out an offer for it from time to time.
(That and adding supplemental card holders, another periodic bonus points offer)
Small correction: 5000MR is worth 5000 Avios, not 3000

Do you still get 5000 MR points if you still hold Amex Platinum charge card at the time of applying?

No – you’ll be fully entitled to the BA credit card bonus too.
