The Heathrow Express can certainly be a convenient way to get between the airport and central London, but it can also cost more than a cheap flight!. The good news is that there’s a new Heathrow Express discount, for booking at least one day before you want to travel, which takes some of the sting out of it.
Heathrow Express is always extremely keen to let you know that the journey to/from Paddington only takes 15 minutes and that’s the angle taken with the new offer too: “Be there in 15 mins for just £15”.
You need to purchase tickets by 23 April 2017 for travel up to 21 May 2017. Excludes travel during peak 7am-10am and 4pm-7pm Monday to Friday, except bank holidays.
How does this compare?
Well, it seems you now need a Statistics Degree to understand all the various Heathrow Express fares (I’ve not even included the Bank Holiday pricing, etc, in the image below), so I appreciate the simplicity of the new offer if nothing else!
The upshot is that you can pay as little as £5.50 one-way (at the weekend) if you book 90 days in advance, but £12.10-£14.30 is the more usual fare for booking 30-90+ days in advance.
Buying a ticket on the day would set you back £22.
£15 is cheaper than the standard £16.50 fare for booking 14+ days in advance – and you only need to book the day before. On that basis I’d say it’s a pretty good deal (relatively!), given the additional flexibility.
Whether paying £15 is a good deal, or not, in itself, is more debateable. It’s getting towards a price I would pay if Paddington was convenient for my trip, but it’s not a no-brainer.
Anything to add?
The full list of Heathrow Express discount codes is available here.
You will collect Heathrow Rewards points at a rate of 1 per £1 on this travel, which can be converted to air miles or Heathrow Airport shopping vouchers.
Children aged 15 years and under travel free with an accompanying adult (aged 18+), which makes the Heathrow Express well worth considering for families.
Bottom line
£15 still isn’t cheap, but it is at least more realistic. Handing over more than £20 always just seems completely unreasonable for such a short journey!
