IHG Rewards Club has just launched its latest ‘personalised’ IHG Points sale. It seems however that everyone bags a 75% bonus, though your minimum points purchase for the bonus may vary:

The sale runs until 28 February and provides the opportunity to buy IHG Points for ~0.47p each (0.657 US cents), or £4.70 per 1,000 Points in real money. You can purchase up to 60,000 points (+45,000 bonus points) each calendar year.

Is it worth buying points?

This isn’t as good as it gets, because IHG has offered 100% bonus points in the past. But buying points in this manner can sometimes make financial sense compared with paying cash for a hotel. Remember that you really should compare it to a flex rate, as reward night bookings can be cancelled.

On Tuesday, 30 January, the flex rate at the Intercontinental Park Lane is £446:

After the recent devaluation, a reward night is 70,000 points, which you can buy in the current sale for £326. So if you had to stay in that hotel on that night, you’d be better off buying the points.

IHG also runs regular ‘PointsBreak’ promotions (the new list will be released later today!), offering rooms at select hotels for only 5,000-15,000 points. Assuming you buy points with a 75% bonus at £4.70 per 1,000 Points, you could be paying as little as £23.50 per night. That’s not to be sniffed at.

Bottom Line

We’ve seen higher bonuses on IHG Points in the past, so I won’t be buying myself at £4.70 per 1,000 at the moment. That’s because I have a healthy balance already though and no immediate plans to use many. For specific high-value redemptions there are occasions where it could make sense to buy IHG Points at this price. It may also make sense to go for this now if you are only a few thousand points short of an award night. It would then make sense to buy a smaller amount assuming that bags you a bonus. (My ‘personalised’ offer shows that I would need to buy at least 20k points to get the 75% bonus).
