It’s back! –  Regular readers will remember that Lufthansa has run a number of promotions over the last year offering bonus miles for hotel stays booked through the Miles & More Hotels portal. I wrote about one of these promotions back in June, see here, when Lufthansa offered 5,000 bonus miles.

You can now earn up to 10,000 ‘Miles & More’ Miles, for a booking made between 1 and 31 October 2017 through the dedicated offer page here. This is in addition to the minimum of 1,000 miles per night you’ll bag anyway.

The t&c’s have been tweaked, however, and this offer only applies to first-time users of the Miles & More Hotels portal. Your spend determines how many bonus miles you’ll earn:

You can stay whenever and you can only bag the bonus once.

Good deal?

Let’s assume you value a Miles & More mile at 1p each.

If you book a one-night stay just above the minimum spend requirement (100€), you will earn 2,000 Miles & More, effectively giving you an instant rebate of 20% (1,000 miles per night plus 1,000 bonus miles).

If you book a 5-night stay costing you just above 1,000 euros. You should earn at least 5,000 miles (1,000 miles minimum per night) plus the 10,000 bonus miles, giving you an effective rebate 15%.

You will do even better in most cases because you will often earn more than 1,000 miles per night. Here’s a dummy booking for random dates in November for a room in Tokyo:

Remember that you only need 17,500 miles for a one-way business class redemption from New York to, say, Los Angeles on United’s fully-flat transcontinental service. This is a considerable rebate on your room rate!

Things to consider:

  • You will be billed in euros, so use a card with no FX fee
  • These bookings count as third-party bookings, so will not earn points in the hotel’s own loyalty scheme and you are unlikely to receive hotel status benefits.
  • Miles & More points expire exactly 36 months after the individual miles were earned, irrespective of future account activity. (Taking out the free UK Miles & More credit card stops all your miles from expiring). Miles & More is not a Membership Rewards transfer partner, so topping up your account in the UK can be tricky. That said, you can transfer Heathrow Rewards points and SPG points into Miles & More, and there are some fantastic redemptions to be had, as I have discussed here.
  • Compare prices before you book. You might well find a cheaper rate by booking direct (which could earn you cashback on top). If it’s not your own cash you’re spending, then this is a fantastic promotion to earn some rewards for yourself.
