Should You Buy Marriott Points Ahead of the Devaluation?

Marriott Bonvoy has announced details of its latest “buy points with a bonus” promotion. The promo will run until 23 March, 2022. You can receive a 40-50% bonus, depending on how many points you buy.

  • 40% bonus when buying 2,000-9,000 points
  • 45% bonus when buying 10,000-39,000 points
  • 50% bonus when buying 40,000+ points

An additional 10% discount is available if you pay with a UnionPay card. (unless you are reading this from China, though, you are unlikely to have one in your wallet…)

Does it Make Sense?

Because a devaluation is imminent, you definitely shouldn’t be speculatively stocking up on Marriott points!

But if you are trying to squeeze in as many points redemptions as possible BEFORE the devaluation, then this promotion is your last chance to buy them at a discount. A 50% bonus means that you would be paying 0.83 cents per point. (0.61p)

If you are redeeming points at expensive hotels using Marriott’s fifth night free award pricing, you can easily get higher than 0.6p in value…

If You Do Buy, Don’t Forget Cashback

Regular readers will know that I regularly promote TopCashback because, among other reasons, you can earn some cashback on your points/miles purchases when they are processed by Points.com.

Note that Points.com is only available on the USA version of TopCashback, but cashing out via Paypal is easy.

Not A Member of TopCashback USA Yet?

If you are not yet a member of TopCashback USA, you can earn an additional $15. Simply sign up using this referral link – http://www.topcashback.com/join-us/inside-flyer/ref/craigsowerby – and earn $10 of cashback.

It’s really quite simple to earn $10 of cashback. Buying $400 worth of Marriott points would get you there.

Alternatively, the number of hotel chains available via TopCashback is impressive – Hilton, IHG, Marriott, Accor, Choice, Best Western, etc. – as well as the major Online Travel Agencies. So a single hotel stay will probably get you there…
