As our “favourite” travel hacker credit card, we’ve long sung the praises of the Amex Gold credit card. The American Express sign up bonus has always been impressive on the Gold card, while the added extras have also been strong.
Indeed, pretty much the entire team at Insideflyer holds one, and we’ve all made very good use of both the points earning benefits, and the perks.
The historic American Express sign up bonus and benefits
The American Express Gold credit card is widely seen as one of the very best value “travel-related” credit cards available in the UK.
The reasons for this are pretty clear:
- It is free for the first year, and you can cancel without quibble at the end of this year.
- You earn Amex points on it for our everyday spend (1 point per £1).
- If you spend £3,000 on it in your first 3 months, you will ordinarily get 20,000 Amex Membership Rewards Points. These convert to 20,000 airline miles in a number of schemes, including Avios.
- You get two free airport lounge visits each year with the card.
But ignore that – a massive replacement sign up bonus has arrived!
The third bullet point above talks about the 20K bonus points. That has been scrapped for now… and replaced with an unprecedented 35,000 point bonus. You can benefit from the boosted 35K point sign up bonus via this link. Appying directly via Amex will get you 30K points, 5K less.
There are various things you could spend 35,000 Amex points on, but one very clear option is 35,000 Avios. If you wanted to then cash the points out, you could also then convert those 35,000 Avios into 56,000 Nectar points, worth a guaranteed minimum of £280 to spend in Sainsburys, Argos, eBay or M&A.
In short, there has never been a better time to sign up for the American Express Gold card. This is one that’s certainly worth thinking about as this unprecedented offer ends on 9 November.
