Recently I wrote about Virgin Atlantic Flying Club giving away 250 miles for downloading (unsuccessfully) a shopping portal toolbar. Now, it’s the turn of the shopping portal provided by American Airlines AAdvantage. But there’s a catch…

Not only do you have to install the “button” to your browser, you must spend $50 before 2 May, 2019 to receive the 250 bonus miles.

Why Use the American Airlines Shopping Portal?

I’ve written about it previously, because it is an excellent way of receiving additional value from Marriott hotel bookings.  Currently, Marriott is paying out 6 miles per US dollar spent.

And unlike other hotel chain / shopping portal combinations (ahem! Hilton / Avios), you receive your miles relatively rapidly. Here is an email I recently received that confirms my miles for a late March stay.

I didn’t even pay $167. That was the rate before successfully claiming a Best Rate Guarantee! 🙂

What About That $50 Spend?

Any Marriott stay should do it…  Simply book your next hotel stay before 2 May – you can book a flexible rate if you prefer; there’s no need to prepay – and you should easily meet the $50 hurdle.

You probably won’t find a $50 hotel room in very many places, but those 250 miles could be 5 additional miles per dollar spent…

How Does the Button Work?

Not well…  Although the installation worked for me, it seems that it won’t subsequently work for the Marriott website…

Never mind… but I’m happy enough to uninstall the button once my 250 miles have posted…

Conclusion

Taking advantage of these little travel hacks is one of the best ways to reduce the cost of your hotel stays. So if you might have an upcoming Marriott stay, you should consider downloading the “button” and earning yourself 250 bonus miles from American Airlines. Always need to be careful with the tax-included rates of course. Once you back out VAT and apply a silly FX rate, you might find your ÂŁ50+ room rate counting as $48 for the purposes of the promo.
