IHG Rewards Club (the loyalty programme for brands like Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, etc) has just launched a potentially very lucrative free night offer.
“It’s on us. Travel in the UK and experience the best Britain has to offer. When you spend two nights at any of our stunning new properties listed, you’ll get a free* night (*room rate only) at one of over 5,000 IHG hotels worldwide.
So, whether you decide to spend a couple of nights here or two nights there, you’ll still get a free night anywhere.“
The eligible properties are:
- Kimpton Fitzroy London
- The Met Hotel, Leeds
- Principal York
- Principal Manchester
- voco™ St David’s, Cardiff
- Principal Edinburgh Charlotte Square
- Principal Edinburgh George Street
- Blythswood Square Hotel, Glasgow
- Wotton House, near Dorking, Surrey
What do I need to do to get a free night certificate?
- Register for the offer here.
- Book 2 nights at the selected UK properties between 17 December 2018 – 31 March 2019 (note that these DO NOT need to be consecutive nights. Booking 2 separate stays is absolutely fine).
- Redeem your free night before 31 October 2019. Free night can be redeemed at over 5,000 hotels.
Rates at some of the participating hotels can be remarkably reasonable too, making this offer ‘mattress-runnable‘.
Bottom line
This is the sort of promotion that genuinely persuades me to swap existing bookings with other chains over to IHG. It’s also a great ‘excuse’ to try out some of the interesting looking new hotels. Good effort IHG!
Anyone else planning to take advantage of this one?

Very tempting. A great find. But the registration page has a mandatory field for Promotion Code and I have no idea. What am I missing?
Joe Deeney says
Hi John,
Sorry about that – have updated the link in the article to one that hopefully should work properly! https://www.ihg.com/content/gb/en/deals/partner-offers/principal-offer?promoCode=65351

Hey look, good ‘ole Hfp ran a very similar article a day later, also citing that the met hotel in leeds @ £40 a night was a possible mattress run. Co-incidence ?, possibly, except that their article also forgot to include the promo code, which was later updated. I guess in reading articles “for ideas”, they also need to read the comments 🙂
Craig Sowerby says
Shocking isn’t it… 😉
But I’m not one to throw stones from a glass house, as I am occasionally “inspired” by Loyalty Lobby… 😀
John says
How do I find the Met at £40? Is there a tool which will show me the cost per night so I can spot the cheap dates?
Joe Deeney says
Sadly not – at least as far as I know, IHG don’t offer the option to see a month at a time or whatever like Hilton. The general trend for UK city centre hotels is that Sundays are usually cheapest, with Fridays and Mondays often being pretty good too. For the Met, I looked at a bunch of Fridays and Sundays through Jan and early Feb, which were all in the £40-ish ballpark. Note that you need to search for 1 person rather than 2, to get the very cheapest.
I’ve since discovered we can actually do even better though, by using our old friend the IHG Mastercard partner rate: https://insideflyer.co.uk/2017/07/favourite-regular-hotel-discount-30-off-ihg-partner-rate-open-everyone/ . The best rate I can find using that is an incredible £28.35!
john says
Joe I love you. That is a bargain; free night for £58. Might be 2 mattress runs about to be booked.
Joe Deeney says
Haha! – yeah my mind has idly wandered onto the topic of how many family members I could check in for ‘before they arrived’, until it started raising flags…
john says
Booked one mattress run. Just waiting on the other for confirmation of something that might get in the way, but one way or another I’ll be booking the second very soon.
John says
Answered my own question partly. Sunday night’s are the cheapest prices.
James says
Crikey, can you get two nights together each for £28.35 ?? Bit of petrol money involved for me to get up to Leeds.
john browell says
Just booked my second stay, both for single rooms at £28.35. Planning a few drinks in Leeds on one of the dates anyway, so I’ll use the room a bit. And hope that my Spire status gets me an upgrade !
Only problem I have is that the IHG system will not let me sign into their website with my details, so add it to my membership – been doing that for a few days. But I can add it via the app.
Joe Deeney says
I don’t think so, but maybe. The cheapest I’ve seen for 2 nights is Sundays and Mondays, averaging out at £35.91 per night – so £71.82 total
john says
I am here now for the first mattress run. Booked at £28.35 for a cosy room single bed, and Spire status has got me an upgrade to a Superior King room. The room is pretty basic, but perfectly functional. The bed is huge ! Enjoying a few cups of tea while updating this thread, before I head home.
The lovely receptionist informed me this is going to be part of the Indigo flavour of IHG hotels soon. She also acknowleged my IHG membership without needing a prompt.
So it’s all good so far. Back in a few weeks for the second mattress run.
Joe Deeney says
Great to hear John!
