A few months have passed since the last offer, but Starwood Preferred Guest is going to finish 2017 with another 35%-off deal for buying Starpoints. The promotion will run between now and 29 December, 2017.

If you buy between 5,000 and the annual maximum of 30,000 points, you will pay a price of 2.28 U.S. cents each – this works out to roughly 1.7p (depending on the volatile GBP:USD exchange rate and whether your credit card has zero-commission FX conversions)

Although you can definitely find value in buying Starpoints and using them on hotel stays, especially for Category 1 and 2 hotels (maximum 4,000 points per night = £68), many SPG members choose to convert their Starpoints into airline miles.

If we look at the plain vanilla 20,000 Starpoints = 25,000 airline miles conversion, you would end up paying only 1.36p per mile. This is going to be a bargain for exotic (or hard to accumulate) miles such as ANA or Alaska with great reward charts – and the value proposition will only improve if you aim for a Marriott Rewards Travel Package requiring the equivalent of 90,000 Starpoints

As always, it’s worth remembering two things:

  1. An account must be open for at least 14 days before buying (or receiving) Starpoints
  2. You can transfer the points of any family members (resident at the same address) into your main SPG account

Due to the Marriott merger, this might be one of your last opportunities to buy SPG points at such a large discount (Marriott never sell MR points at a discount). Will the discount get even larger, or are you going to jump on 35%?
