Biz Class to Middle East for 25k Miles – Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Redemption Sweetspots (and How to Get the Miles!)

Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer loyalty programme doesn’t get a lot of attention in the UK, which is a shame because there are some great KrisFlyer redemption sweetspots available!

I’ve written about the fantastic value you can get by redeeming Miles for Business Class between East Asia and Istanbul or South Africa before (just 45,000 Miles!), but wanted to share something a little more convenient for most readers today.

Business Class from Europe to the Middle East for 25,000 Miles (and First Class for 35,000!)

There are plenty KrisFlyer redemption sweetspots on the main Singapore Airlines / SilkAir award chart, but the (separate) Star Alliance partner award chart is well worth a look too.

Note that the amounts listed are for roundtrips and that one-way awards are available for half the Miles (with the exception of redemptions on SAS and TAP Portugal where only roundtrip redemptions are allowed).

Between Europe and the Middle East/North Africa Region the roundtrip rates are 35,000/50,000/70,000 Miles for Economy, Business Class, First Class, respectively  – so 17,500/25,000/35,000 Miles one-way.

Krisflyer defines the Middle East /North Africa region as including the following countries:

and you can redeem at the above rates on any of the following Star Alliance airlines (assuming the routing makes sense!):

Surcharges charged by partner airlines are passed on when redeeming KrisFlyer Miles unfortunately, so the best value will usually be on one-ways back to the UK (no Air Passenger Duty either then).

For context, surcharges on Turkish Business Class look to be around ~£190 from London Return (+£150 APD), whereas a one way from Dubai to London would only attract surcharges of ~£85. Lufthansa or Swiss would be over £300 (+£150 APD) Return from London, or ~£150 one-way from Dubai. First Class works out the same.

You can have a quick look at what surcharges and taxes would add up to using ITA Matrix.

It is worth pointing out that you can get a free stopover if you book a Return.

I don’t have any KrisFlyer Miles… How do I get some?

The good news is that American Express Membership Rewards Points transfer at a 1-1 rate to KrisFlyer.

The sign-up bonus (if referred) on the American Express Gold card is 22,000 Points and you’d have at least another 2,000 for hitting the minimum spend – s0 24,000. Getting to 25,000 really isn’t too hard then.

You can also transfer Starwood Preferred Guest Points at the same 1-1 ratio, but I’d personally save those and just use Amex Membership Rewards Points if you can.

Bottom line

There are still quite a few KrisFlyer Redemption Sweetspots that are a bit ‘under the radar’ of many Points/Miles collectors. I’ll try and highlight a few more later this week!

Wow, Singapore in Biz for such low amount of miles. Got to hand it to Amex, they certainly have a lot of interesting redemption partners.

OT: anyone had first hand experience of booking EY flights via ANA call centre? Been reading some very concerning posts on FT on ANA CS not knowing how to book EY flights.

50k Amex MR points for a Biz return UK to ME…..I’m IN.
Which routes to the ME from the UK do they have first class on ??????

  3. Craig Sowerby says

Of course you won’t be flying on Singapore Airlines to the ME from Europe. Just partners…

I imagine Lufthansa might have some First Class, but I would assume that they will only let partners see the award space 14 days in advance. Swiss normally won’t let anybody have it…

Everybody else will just have Business Class, and all require a transfer from a short haul (except TK which has long haul style J in Europe) So fewer miles, but paying surcharges and a connection. At least you won’t have to worry about the laptop ban except with TK!

This is interesting & a well timed post. Currently trying to plan a multi stop Asia tour solely on miles. Would be interesting to fly TK biz from London to mid-east & then onwards to asia using CX. Any idea if these redemptions are changeable/refundable (like Avios)?
