IHG Rewards Club (the main loyalty programme for Intercontinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, etc) is currently offering the opportunity to buy IHG Points at what is likely to be the best price available this year.

The 100% bonus on all purchases of 5,000+ Points is available until tomorrow (17th Feb 2017. Technically, 04:59 am GMT on the 18th), and you can take advantage here.

Good deal?

It depends, but in some circumstances it could be.

At the top end, if you bought 60,000 Points (+ 60,000 Bonus Points) you would be paying ~ 0.46p (0.575 Cents), per Point, or ~£4.60 per 1,000.

IHG regularly releases a PointBreaks List, where all hotels featured are just 5,000 Points per night – so £23 per night! Hotels on the list aren’t always the most desirable, but there’s usually still a sprinkle of good ones. Before Christmas I stayed at the (perfectly good) Holiday Inn Express Hamburg City Centre on PointBreaks when cash rates were £70+.

At the more luxurious end of the spectrum, the highest category IHG hotels require 60,000 Points per night, which would cost £276.00 if buying Points now. While that’s far too rich for me, hotels like the Intercontinental Park Lane regularly charge much more (I saw rates of £500+ recently!), and if you were genuinely going to pay cash anyway, then you could potentially save a bundle.

Not a mistake – New Year’s Eve in New York is unbelievably expensive!

Buying Points to book hotels for New Year’s Eve or when there is a big event on nearby etc can also make sense as cash rates can be stratospheric – just make sure that there definitely is Points availability first!

Bottom line

Barely a month goes by without IHG offering some sort of discount or bonus to try and get you to buy IHG Points, but 100% bonus or (50% off) are as good as they get. Bonuses / discounts are sometimes targeted too, so the fact this is a general offer, open to everyone, is good to see too.

Would I buy IHG Points for £4.60 per 1,000? Not at the moment, no. That’s because I have a healthy balance already though and no immediate plans to use many. For specific high-value redemptions there are occasions where it could make sense to buy IHG Points at this price – and we are unlikely to see a better offer, based on past precedent.
