I’ve recently switched my credit card focus to collecting Miles&More points – with a view to getting myself into the Frankfurt Lufthansa First Class Terminal! However, these miles can be difficult to collect for people based in the UK that do not regularly fly.
Whilst most popularly associated with Lufthansa, Miles&More is also the loyalty scheme for 13 other airlines (mostly those owned by Lufthansa such as Swiss/Austrian, but also LOT) and you can earn/use your miles across other Star Alliance airlines.
Booking Hotels to earn Miles&More Points
Lufthansa Miles&More has a hotel booking portal, similar to sites like Rocketmiles. You earn a stated amount of miles per booking, more than you might otherwise through the hotel’s own loyalty programme, but the trade off is that you will likely receive no status recognition from the hotel nor hotel loyalty points.
This can offer a decent opportunity to earn “useful” miles if you are planning a stay in a city with none of your preferred chain’s properties, or just want to top up your Miles&More account.
Bonus Miles
During December, first time customers booking through the Lufthansa Miles&More hotels portal will receive an additional 6,000 bonus miles on top of the usual earnings for stays of 2 nights or more.
You must book by 31st December, but it seems valid for stays into January based on some random dates I checked in Birmingham:
The rates are in Euros, so bear that in mind when comparing prices and selecting your payment card (most credit cards charge a 3% non-sterling transaction fee).
Generally prices on Lufthansa are broadly comparable to other third party booking sites – but the added bonus miles can tip the balance (The above example prices at £254 on Hotels.com, which is pretty much exactly the same as the Lufthansa price in Euros assuming you have a 0% credit card/Supercard).
One quirk of the site, is it appears to default your location to “Germany”, language EN. Don’t worry about this – you can still enter your UK billing address and details, there’s nothing in the Terms and Conditions referring to residency requirements. If you change the location back to UK, the offer disappears.
This makes it easier than last month’s offer, where you actually had to leave the site in the German language to take advantage of 5,000 bonus miles for a 1 night stay. So this could be a good opportunity to get a fair number of Miles&More if you were planning a long weekend over the Christmas break, without resorting to the use of GCSE German and Google Translate!
I will keep an eye out, and report back if the offer returns in a different guise (on the English or German site) in January…
