Whether you use Miles or cash, getting to Australia or New Zealand is usually pretty expensive. Cash prices are rarely below £600.00 and often much higher, but right now Etihad and China Eastern are both offering some excellent deals.

To Australia, you can fly from London to Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne or Sydney from £503.00, mainly on Etihad Airways but with China Eastern and Cathay Pacific popping up as options on some dates too. Flights from other UK airports are possible with Etihad for an extra £30.00-£100.00.

Availability is superb and dates are available from October all the way through to May with a gap during the Christmas/New Year festivities.

To New Zealand, China Eastern as charging as little as £513.00 to Auckland from London, which is an incredible price – especially considering you can book for dates from January 2017 all the way through to June.

Remember that you can’t fly direct from the UK to Australia or New Zealand, so changing planes in Abu Dhabi or Shanghai isn’t any more inconvenient than more expensive options on other airlines.

To search, I usually find Skyscanner’s month view is the best option unless you’ve got very specific travel dates.

Are the airlines any good?

These are long flights, so it’s a fair question.

If you’re a regular reader you probably already know we are a little bit in love with Etihad’s Business and First Class cabins, and Economy is very pleasant too (as far as Economy goes…). If you are travelling on Etihad, remember to check out the current bonus Miles promotion!

China Eastern is the second largest airline in China and a member of the SkyTeam Alliance. 20+ hours in Economy is never going to be great to be honest, but I don’t think it would be terrible – and the price is certainly right!
