IHG Rewards Club is currently running a ‘personalised’ bonus on purchases of IHG Points. In reality, it seems that everyone gets a 40% bonus when buying up to 9,000 Points and an 80% bonus for buying 10,000 or more.

All you have to do is go to this page, sign in, and the bonus should come up automatically as below.

IHG usually sells Points at a rate of £10.30 ($13.50) per 1,000, so with an 80% bonus that works out at ~ £5.83 per thousand instead.

If you want to take advantage you have until 9th September and can purchase up to 60,000 Points (+ 48,000 bonus Points) each calendar year.

Why is it a bad idea?

IHG Points can be very useful (Pointsbreaks redemptions start at just 5,000 Points!) and an 80% bonus sounds generous, so what’s the problem…

Ian posted a couple of days ago about an offer for IHG Platinum Elites which allows them to buy Points for ~ £4.20 per thousand. If you read his article closely though, you will see that he also highlights a trick which means that any member can buy Points for ~ £4.80 per thousand any time!
