Qatar Airways has launched Starlink Wi-Fi on one of its Boeing 777 aircraft, marking a significant milestone in onboard connectivity for the airline. The carrier has become the first to offer Starlink’s high-speed service on this aircraft type, providing passengers with fast, reliable internet access.
High-speed Wi-Fi in the skies
In a unique move, the airline shared a press release at 10,000 metres from the ground. They even sent photos and videos to the media during the flight, proving the capability of Starlink Wi-Fi. Adding to the excitement, Qatar Airways’ CEO, Badr Mohammed Al Meer, connected with Elon Musk, CEO of Starlink, for a video call while onboard. It’s clear the airline is focused on giving passengers an experience that feels modern and seamless.
Qatar Airways to introduce Starlink Wi-Fi across its fleet
Qatar Airways is now moving quickly to implement Starlink Wi-Fi across more aircraft, as the airline believes that high-speed connectivity is key to improving the passenger experience. By the end of the year, 12 Boeing 777-300s will be equipped with Starlink. The remainder of the 777 fleet will follow in 2025. Next summer, installation will begin on the Airbus A350 fleet as well.
While this high-speed internet is an exciting addition, the true speed of the connection remains to be seen. Qatar Airways may need to consider potential issues, like multiple passengers placing video calls on loudspeaker. Situations like these could quickly lead to congestion and affect the quality of the free service.
The latest Qsuite business class: even more to enjoy
Not only has Qatar Airways introduced Starlink Wi-Fi, but the airline is also rolling out its newest Qsuite business class. Unveiled at the Farnborough International Airshow this past summer, the updated Qsuite offers greater comfort and privacy than ever before. Passengers can combine four Qsuites into a ‘Quad Suite’ for group travel. For those travelling as a duo, two Qsuites can also be connected to form a Companion Suite.
Qatar Airways’ latest Qsuite will also include new inflight entertainment screens, improved privacy options, and a digital cabin assistant powered by AI, named Sama. While the value of Sama is still to be fully understood, it will be interesting to see how/if greater onboard connectivity and developments in AI improve the passenger experience.
