We usually use Uber or other taxi apps when we can’t (or don’t want to) drive. Uber’s new product ‘Uber Rent’ aims to change that. The rental option has apparently been successful in Europe and the U.S., so is now being rolled out in the UK from today.
How does Uber Rent work?
Customers select the ‘Rent’ tile on the Uber app, then provide date and location details. If a suitable vehicle/s is available, they should then be shown the option/s, then just click confirm, ready for getting the keys and hitting the road. The app was a bit glitchy on launch date – sometimes initially showing no cars available, when there actually was – but hopefully that will improve rapidly.
There is free cancellation up to 48 hours before collection time.
Bookings can even be made just before a pick up but it’s best to book at least 24 hours in advance to get what you want at the best price.
Uber is currently offering two different incentives to get customers to try the new rental option.
First, you can get 10% of the cost of your rental back as Uber credits – “Uber Credits will be applied to your account within 10 days of your date of pick-up. Uber Credits will expire within 180 days of the date of issue”
You can also get £10 credit towards the taxi trip to get you to your rental vehicle:
“This offer is only available to users who have booked their rental on Uber Rent and request a ride to a rental pickup location in the United Kingdom for the date noted in your confirmation email. Maximum ride credit of £10 per ride. Offer will be valid for use on each of your first 3 Uber Rent bookings, upto a maximum discount of £10 on each ride. Not valid if the rental pickup is within 24 hours of booking.”
Assuming they get the app working properly, this should certainly be a convenient new option for renting a car. Whether the price is right though remains to be seen…
