For several months, a technical glitch meant that Iberia Plus was unable to sell Avios. This problem has been fixed, and Iberia Plus is running a promotion to celebrate.
Iberia Plus has updated its prices to charge in euros, pounds sterling or US dollars. Given current exchange rates, however, you will definitely want to pay in euros (with a zero commission credit / debit card of course).
How to Pay in Euros
Iberia’s Terms & Conditions state that you will be charged in the currency where your account is located. (this now matches the British Airways Executive Club policy)
As a result, you must update your Iberia Plus profile to have a postal address in Spain. Choose your favourite hotel or ask a friend living in Spain. (nothing will ever arrive in the post, unless you reach elite status and a new card is sent to you…)
It is worth highlighting that some Iberia Plus promotions – especially 50% off reward flights – are sometimes restricted to Spanish residents. Even more reason to register your Iberia Plus account to a Spanish postal address…
The price of Avios gets gradually cheaper the more you buy. The cheapest price tends to settle around the 1.2 euro cent level, which is slightly more than 1p per Avios. You do need to buy 150,000+ Avios to get that price though.
For smaller top ups, you shouldn’t pay much more than 1.2p per Avios.
Now that Iberia Plus has fixed its IT, these promotions will probably come around every few months. As a result, there’s no need to buy Avios speculatively. Devaluations can and do come at any time…
But if you have a redemption in mind and need to top up your Avios balance, now is the perfect time…
