Marriott has long offered a status challenge, where Bonvoy members who held elite status with other hotel programmes could fast track to Gold or Platinum. The problem was that you did not receive elite status with Marriott Bonvoy during the challenge period – only once you had completed the required stays.
For a limited period of time, Marriott is now offering a new status match, which does provide elite status with Marriott Bonvoy during the challenge.
For a limited time: Marriott Bonvoy Status Match Challenge
How long this status match challenge will be available is unfortunately not known. However, if you plan to use it, you should probably register for it sooner rather than later. This can be done online on the designated landing page .
If you have a comparable status with one of the specified competitive programs, you will receive the corresponding status with Marriott Bonvoy for 90 days.
You then have to complete a set number of nights in order to keep the status until February 2022:
- Marriott Bonvoy Gold: 5 nights
- Marriott Bonvoy Platinum: 15 nights
You have to provide proof of the corresponding competitive status as well as a stay in the competitive program within the last 12 months.
Which loyalty programs are valid for the challenge?
The Marriott Bonvoy status match challenge applies to four loyalty programmes:
Hilton Honors
- Gold and Diamond Members are eligible for the Platinum Challenge
IHG Rewards
- Platinum and Spire Elite members are eligible for the Platinum Challenge
World of Hyatt
- Explorist members are eligible for the Gold Challenge
- Globalist members are eligible for the Platinum Challenge
Accor Live Limitless
- Gold members are eligible for the Gold Challenge
- Platinum and Diamond members are eligible for the Platinum Challenge
I have drawn particular attention to the fact that Hilton Gold and IHG Platinum match across to Marriott Platinum, because both of those status levels can be easily acquired through fast-tracks, credit cards, or other promotions.
Marriott Gold isn’t really worth making much effort to get, but Platinum definitely is – check out the benefits here.
Bottom line
This is a generous offer from Marriott. Even if you don’t intend to complete the full 15 nights, it could still potentially make sense to sign up just to enjoy free Platinum benefits on any stays that you do make over the next 90 days.
Note: I’ve had trouble registering my own account, possibly because I already have Gold status. Let me know in the comments how you get on!
