For many years, American Express has run a ‘Shop Small’ promotion in the run up to Christmas – offering £5 statement credits whenever you spend £10+ at thousands of small businesses. It’s a great promotion, and to help boost businesses suffering during the corona crisis, Amex has decided to have a Summer ‘Shop Small’ this year.

“To help support small business to recovery following the national COVID-19 lockdown, American Express is launching the Shop Small Offer earlier this year. The Offer, which is the biggest ever, will run for 12 weeks from 22 June to 13 September, and rewards Cardmembers to support their local small businesses by shopping small, giving them £5 back when they spend £10 or more at participating outlets. The Offer can be used once per participating location and at up to 10 different shops. This means that Cardmembers can earn up to £50 back during this year’s Shop Small.”

The promotion is live now and runs until 13th September, so there is plenty of time to take advantage.

You can earn back up to £50 in total if you shop at 10 different participating businesses, and that is per card. If you have multiple Amex cards (including supplementary cards you may have given to family members) you can save even more.

Note that you need to log in to your Amex account and save the offer to each card individually.

Where to shop small?

“The Shop Small map is full of small shops across the UK, perfect for when you’re looking for some inspiration about where to go when you are out and about. All the shops featured accept American Express, which means every time you use your Card to shop small, you’ll not only be rewarded on your everday spend but also helping your local small businesses to thrive so that your community does too.

You can search the Shop Small map here.

Bottom line

This is an excellent promotion, at a time when supporting local businesses is even more important than usual. The map can be a bit buggy, so don’t be surprised if you end up accidentally triggering some £5 credits shopping at places that don’t appear on it!

Who knows – it might even be possible to have a (socially distanced) drink at a pub soon. It will taste even sweeter with Amex picking up half the tab…

Oh, Joe, you are teasing us with a picture of a barber at work. First place I’m going when they open (well, after the pub!)

😉 4th July apparently! I actually just booked my 1st holiday – an Airbnb literally 30 minutes walk from where I live…
