In response to updated government travel guidance regarding the Wuhan coronavirus, a number of airlines have now completely cancelled (or reduced) services to/from mainland China.

As of last night, these included:

  • British Airways
  • Iberia
  • Finnair
  • Lufthansa
  • Swiss
  • Austrian
  • American
  • United (reduced services)
  • And more

Other airlines are likely to follow suit soon, and almost all airlines are now offering free cancellations to passengers scheduled to travel to China in the immediate future.

For now, services to Hong Kong remain relatively unaffected.

This is obviously a very fluid situation and each individual airline/group has slightly different (and frequently updated) policies in place. If you are due to be travelling to China, keep a close eye on the homepage/news section of your airline for the latest updates, and be proactive if you want to cancel.

Here is the current advice from British Airways (as of 29th January):

“Following Foreign Office advice against all but essential travel to mainland China we have temporarily suspended our flights to and from Beijing and Shanghai with immediate effect, until Friday 31 January, while we assess the situation.

Flights to and from Hong Kong remain unaffected.

This situation will remain under review and we will continue to provide regular updates.
