IHG Rewards Club has launched its latest points sale, this time offering a 100% bonus when you buy 7,000 or more.

All you have to do is go to this page, sign in, and the bonus should come up automatically as below:

As you can see, IHG’s pricing is a bit weird – 25,000 points (before bonus) cost $287.50, but you can buy 26,000 for $260…

Assuming that you therefore buy 26,000+, you’ll be paying ~0.4p (0.5 cents) per IHG Point (once you factor in the bonus). That’s about £4.00 per 1,000 Points in real money.

The sale runs until 24th September 2019 and you can buy 100,000 points (+100,000 bonus points) each calendar year.

Is it worth buying points?

It’s certainly not always a good idea, but buying points in this manner can sometimes make financial sense compared with paying cash for a hotel stay. Remember that you really should compare the cost of buying points to a flex rate, as points bookings can usually be cancelled free of charge. On the other hand, you won’t earn points on award stays, but would if you paid cash.

Flex rates at InterContinental hotels in popular destinations frequently cost more than £400 per night, for example Boston:

If you bought the 70,000 IHG Points required in the sale instead, they would cost you ~£280, so if you had to stay at that particular hotel on that night, you’d be much better off buying the points. Most of us usually have more flexibility than that, but there are occasions when it can make sense.

IHG also runs regular ‘PointBreaks’ promotions, offering rooms at select hotels for only 5,000-15,000 points. If you bought points with the 100% bonus, you could be paying as little as £20 per night, which is obviously fantastic value.

Bottom line

100% is the highest bonus IHG offers on points purchases – therefore if you are in the market for IHG Points, this is as good a time as any to stock up.
