30% Transfer Bonus to Aeroplan – And Why You Might Want To Take Advantage…

Aeroplan (the frequent flyer programme of Air Canada) is currently running a 30% bonus when you transfer hotel points across into Aeroplan Miles.

As usual with these offers, the only option that really leaps out as potentially interesting is transferring Marriott Bonvoy Points (the other hotel programmes’ transfer rates are so bad that even with the bonus it doesn’t often make sense).

Marriott Points normally convert at a rate of 3 Marriott Bonvoy Points to 1 Aeroplan Mile, but if you transfer 60,000 Marriott Points you get 5,000 bonus miles — totalling 25,000 Aeroplan Miles. With the 30% bonus on top, 60,000 Marriott Points would therefore get you 32,500 Aeroplan Miles.

Remember that you can convert American Express Membership Rewards Points to Marriott Bonvoy at a rate of 1:1.5, so this deal effectively allows you to indirectly trade blocks of 40,000 Amex Points for 32,500 Aeroplan Miles.

Note that the bonus Aeroplan Miles may take up to 4‑6 weeks to be credited after the promotional offer end date of 22nd April 2019, so this isn’t a great option if you want to book things immediately.

Why you might want to take advantage

We haven’t spent much time writing about Aeroplan here on InsideFlyer UK, given that it’s usually quite tough to accrue a meaningful balance unless you do a lot of Star Alliance flying. Basically, it’s a pretty decent programme with broadly reasonable award prices. You can check out the award chart for yourself here.

55,000 miles for one way Business Class between Europe and North America, for example, isn’t bad if you’re heading to the West Coast (just make sure you stick to partners like Turkish that don’t incur nasty surcharges!)

The real value to be had from Aeroplan though is generated by the fact you can have 2 free stopovers on return redemptions. Rather than getting into the details here, I suggest you have a read of the nice write up AwardWallet have done on the subject.

Bottom line

To really benefit from this transfer bonus, you’d likely need to have a hefty Marriott/Amex points balance – but if you do, it could well be worth getting familiar with Aeroplan before the bonus ends…
