Ever since Joe ran a series on the United Airlines “Excursionist Perk” – click here for Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 – I’ve paid a whole lot more attention to opportunities to pick up United miles.
500 miles won’t get you far, but when they’re free…
All you have to do is sign up for something called MyPoints. I signed up over the weekend using a random USA zip code (90210 anybody?) and a VPN, and the 500 miles hit my United account on Monday.
I admit to having no real clue how MyPoints works, or whether it is worthwhile trying to earn points by taking surveys or watching videos. But I’ll take the 500 free miles.
As for the extra 1,000 miles? A one-night stay at a Hilton or IHG hotel should be enough to hit the $50+ spend required. I recommend Hilton. Consistent with the cashback websites (and Avios and Virgin Atlantic e-stores), Hilton Honors members are discriminated against when it comes to rebates – you will only earn 1 MyPoints point per dollar. But that doesn’t really matter when you’re aiming for a flat 1,000 United miles and essentially not giving up a more lucrative rebate opportunity in the process.

More importantly, does it reset miles expiry?
Craig Sowerby says
Looks like it does.

Can you transfer these Miles to partners?
Craig Sowerby says
I’m not sure what partner you have in mind. I can’t think of any ways to convert United miles into something else.

Didn’t work for me, for some reason there was an error when creating the account, when I tried again it said it already existed, and when I tried to log in it said my account was deactivated… I was on a VPN and everything.
