Apologies for not posting about this one sooner, but until 23:59 tonight (that’s Eastern Time, so actually 04:59 GMT) you can get an 80% bonus when buying Hilton Points.
You need to buy at least 5,000 Points (+4,000 bonus Points) in order to trigger the bonus.
Hilton usually charges ~£8 ($10) per 1,000 Points (0.8p per Point), so with the bonus it works out as effectively buying Hilton Points for ~0.44p (0.55 cents) per Point – or £4.40 per 1,000.
You can purchase up to 80,000 Hilton Points per year (not including the bonus Points).
Good deal?
You already know the answer by now – it depends! But, it certainly can be a good deal.
0.44p per Hilton Honors Point is a little above our general 0.4p valuation, but Points valuations are always just rule-of-thumb averages. In some circumstances, you can redeem Hilton Points for a lot more than 0.4p – and if you would otherwise be paying cash for those stays, you can therefore save a good chunk of cash by buying and redeeming Points instead.
Take, for example, the Hilton DoubleTree Greenwich which I flagged earlier in the week as being the new best value Points redemption in London.
The lowest cash rate for next Tuesday is £134, but the Points options offer much better value.
20,000 Hilton Points would cost £88.00 to buy with the current 80% bonus – saving £46, or ~35%.
Points + Money provides even better value. 8,000 Points would cost about £35.20, so your total cash outlay would be £67.20. In this scenario, buying Points would save you £66.80 – or almost 50%!!
It’s a pretty specific example I grant, but there are decent (if less spectacular) savings to be had more generally too. For instance, on the same night the DoubleTree West End is £273 or 50,000 Points.
Buying 50,000 Points would cost ~£220, therefore saving you £53, or ~ 20%
You are likely to do extremely well if you buy Points to redeem at Category 1 hotels, which require just 5,000 Points per night. Although there aren’t many around these days, there are still some great examples like the Hilton Salalah in Oman, or the Hampton Krakow.
460 Zloty is equivalent to ~ £90, or you could use Points bought for ~£22! That’s a saving of £68, or 75%!!
You could also potentially save substantial amounts at Category 2 hotels (10,000 Points) too, on nights when the cash rates are relatively high. For example, a stay at the DoubleTree Sheffield Park could either cost you £114, or 10,000 Points, which you could currently buy for ~£44. That’s a saving of £70, or more than 60%!
Caveats
First of all it’s important to be clear that buying Hilton Points (even with a bonus) only really makes sense when hotels have relatively high cash rates and relatively low award Categories, or if a hotel has a particularly high cash rate for the date you want to stay, like in the example of the DoubleTree West End above.
The other main drawback is that by using Points you will miss out on earning the Points you would get from a normal cash stay (you will probably still get the current 2,000 per night bonus Points though, at least on Points + Money stays) and potential cashback, so do make sure you take that into account. In my view, a saving of anything above 15% should be worth buying and using Points for.
Bottom line
Buying Hilton Points (even with the 80% bonus) isn’t always going to be a great deal, but in the right circumstances it could save you a packet!
Don’t forget that the 100% IHG Points bonus and Travelodge sale (rooms from £16.20!) also end tonight!
