Lufthansa Group Plans Restructuring from 2026

The Lufthansa Group is set to undergo a significant restructuring starting January 1, 2026. This initiative will see Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines more closely integrated, in a bid to to strengthen their market position against international competition while “enhancing efficiency and profitability”.

What This Means for Passengers

Despite the integration, each airline will continue to make independent decisions regarding customer experience, including onboard products, catering, lounges, and service. However, many back-end processes will be centralised, following a trend successfully implemented in the Miles & More frequent flyer programme and the joint Lufthansa app.

Key Changes in Network Management

The reorganisation will impact network management, with both long-haul and short/medium-haul routes managed group wide. This approach aims to improve coordination of flight schedules and expedite decision making, benefiting passengers who frequently travel across multiple airlines within the group.

The new structure will be overseen by “Group Function Boards”, comprising representatives from each airline and corporate functions. These boards will focus on areas such as “Hub Steering,” “Technology,” “HR,” and “Finance,” each supported by a “Financial Controller” responsible for financial oversight.

Emphasis on Digitalisation and Innovation

The Lufthansa Group is also prioritising digitalisation and innovation. IT functions will be consolidated under CTO Grazia Vittadini, and the expertise from the “Digital Hangar” and “Innovation & Tech Factory” will be united to accelerate the rollout of new technologies and digital services across the Group.

While passengers can look forward to improved connections, the unique identities of Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines will remain intact. Customers can continue to expect tailored experiences, from lounge design to onboard service.
