KLM introduced its new Premium Comfort (Premium Economy) cabin back in 2022 on board the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The product is now widely available throughout the fleet. InsideFlyer’s Marco had the chance to try it on a flight from Las Vegas to Amsterdam and this is his review…

KLM Premium Comfort tickets

I bought the tickets several months before the trip. Surprisingly, a Premium ticket was not much more expensive than Economy Comfort. The price difference was only about $110, which I think is a worthwhile investment in some extra comfort and service.

The whole trip (Amsterdam to Los Angeles and Las Vegas to Amsterdam) cost me €1,153. The flights earned me 59 XP and 8,636 Miles with Flying Blue.

Baggage drop-off, check-in, and security check

After a great stay at the Hyatt Place Las Vegas at Silverton Village, I return the rental car to the car rental company near the airport.

The process goes smoothly, and before I know it, the shuttle bus takes me to the airport terminal. There are buses running between Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, clearly signposted. You can also check the information screens to see which airline departs from which terminal.

At the entrance, I immediately find the check-in counters. A friendly staff member helps me to check in my luggage at the SkyPriority counter. After placing my luggage on the conveyor belt, I receive a boarding pass. The staff member explains where I can find the security and passport check and wishes me a pleasant journey.

After a short walk, I reached the passport and security check. When I was there, it wasn’t very crowded, and within 5 minutes, I was on the other side of the security check. As a Flying Blue Platinum member, I could use The Club Lounge. However, I decided to go to the American Express Centurion Lounge. You can find out more about the American Express Centurion Lounge Las Vegas in our video review below.

Boarding

After a pleasant visit to the American Express Centurion Lounge, I returned to Terminal 3. This is done using the train shuttling between the D-Concourse and Terminal 3.

From the station, it’s about a 5 minute walk to Gate E2. Opposite this gate, you’ll also find The Club lounge. If you’re a SkyTeam Elite+ member, you will get free access to this lounge.

The boarding process is a bit chaotic unfortunately. Initially, passengers in zones 1 and 2 were supposed to board together. As a result, several passengers in these zones crowd around the gates. Then, all passengers with children were allowed to board first. In the end, passengers in zones 1 and 2 had to board separately. The whole process started 20 minutes later than planned.

The boarding by facial recognition is very convenient. You don’t need to show your boarding pass and passport; you just look at the screen, which makes boarding quite quick.

KLM Premium Comfort cabin & seat

KLM now offers Premium Comfort on more and more routes. At the time of writing, KLM used a Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner with Premium Comfort for flights to and from Las Vegas.

This KLM Dreamliner Premium Comfort cabin has four rows of seats in a 2-3-2 configuration. This time, I’m traveling in seat 12A. Above the seats, you can find overhead bins where you can store your hand luggage. These bins are exclusively for passengers in this cabin. They are convenient to use and easy to open and close.

Rows 11, followed by 12, 14, and 15.

Depending on the time of day, KLM uses different lighting in the cabin. The lighting changes gradually during the flight, which is pleasant.

The Premium Comfort seat differs in every aspect from the Economy Comfort seat. The small price difference for my ticket made it well worth choosing this cabin. Firstly, the cabin is separate from the rest of the plane, providing more privacy. The seats are wide, have a greater recline (8″), and offer ample legroom (pitch 38″).

The only drawback to these seats is that in rows 12, 14, and 15 (there is no row 13), the reclining of the passenger in front of you can limit your space. This isn’t a problem as long as you don’t need to exit your seat to, for example, use the restroom. Otherwise, it can be inconvenient for both yourself and the passenger in front of you.

Row 11 D-E-G

The seats are comfortable, and it’s perfectly fine for the flight from Las Vegas to Amsterdam. The headrest is adjustable, allowing you to set it in the right position.

In rows 12, 14, and 15, the in-flight entertainment system is in the seatback in front of you. In row 11 on the Boeing 787-10, you need to take the IFE from the center console. The screen measures 13.3″ and offers a wide selection of good quality content.

In the center console of seat 12A, you’ll find some storage options and the control panel for the seat. With a few buttons, you can adjust the seat to a comfortable position for your journey. There’s also a reading light, and if you’re seated by the window, you can darken it by pressing the button below the window.

Get Comfortable in Premium Comfort

As I mentioned before, I find the comfort level of this Premium Comfort cabin much better compared to KLM’s Economy (Comfort). Flying in the Economy cabin of the airline is fine, but Premium Comfort is a real upgrade!

A blanket, pillow, and headphones are provided for each passenger (just like in World Business Class). You can also use your own headphones. Unfortunately, there is no possibility for using Bluetooth earphones in this cabin (yet).

Each passenger also receives a small amenity kit, which includes a pen, eye mask, toothbrush with toothpaste, and earplugs.

The power outlet in the center console offers charging options. There are both USB-C and USB-A ports. Personally, I find them a bit inconveniently placed as they are at leg height on the inside of the seat.

Each passenger also receives a bottle of water upon boarding, which you can place in the holder in the center console.

Under the in-flight entertainment (IFE) system, you’ll find two seat pockets. For example, you can store your phone in the upper pocket. In the lower pocket, you’ll find items like the KLM magazine “Holland Herald” and the safety information card.

In the armrest, there is a foldable tray table. The table is large enough to hold a laptop or tablet, and you can easily slide it towards or away from you. It’s also easy to fold it away. Unfortunately, there is no special coating or edge on or around the table, which can cause glasses to slide off the table (as happened during my flight).

Even when the cabin lighting is dimmed, you can easily read a book or do some work. There are lamps both above you and in the seat. You can control the lamp above you using the IFE screen.

Service, menu, and meals during the flight

After all passengers have boarded, the crew finds out that several carts with meals are missing. Unfortunately, the loud chatter can be heard in the cabin.

Eventually, a solution is found, and we depart exactly on time. After the doors are closed, a cabin crew member distributes the Premium Comfort menu cards. A special menu has been developed for passengers in KLM Premium Comfort. During my Dreamliner flight from Las Vegas to Amsterdam with KLM in Premium Comfort, both dinner and breakfast are served.

Before the dinner service begins, each passenger receives a drink and a bag of nuts (after takeoff). There are various drinks to choose from, as indicated on the menu card. I opt for a delicious Espresso Martini Cocktail.

The dinner service follows shortly after. During my flight, there were some service issues. Several trays were missing the salads, which the crew initially didn’t notice. There are two meat dishes and one vegetarian option available on this flight. I chose the vegetarian option with mushroom ravioli and a salad with lobster. The meal tastes very good, and the portion size is generous. It’s possible to order additional drinks during the flight.

My travel companion chose the main meal with pork belly.

For dessert, a Haägen-dasz ice cream cup is served. If you plan to sleep immediately after the meal, it won’t be possible with this ice cream. It’s frozen solid, making it difficult to use a spoon.

During the flight, you can get drinks and snacks from the galley in the Economy Class cabin. It’s also possible to request this from a crew member. During the night, a brownie with a bottle of water is also served.

After a few hours of sleep, I woke up early in the morning. The landing will be happening soon, but before that, breakfast will be served. Unfortunately, the breakfast is not vegetarian, and it includes a salad with turkey ham and salmon. Personally, I find this a strange combination, and I would have chosen to serve them separately. This way, passengers can choose whether or not to eat them. Despite the presence of turkey ham, the salad is tasty. The oatmeal is also very good. A cup of tea follows, and then the cabin is cleaned up and prepared for landing.

WiFi & IFE

WiFi is available on board this KLM Boeing 787-10. It works reasonably well during the flight, with intermittent interruptions, although I didn’t use it for the entire flight. It’s the free WiFi package, which is ideal for providing travel updates to friends and family back home.

The inflight entertainment system on this KLM flight in Premium Comfort from Las Vegas to Amsterdam did not work for the first hour. Only passengers in Business Class could use it. After a reset, the system worked fine. The IFE offers various new movies and films that have been running for a while.

You can also find series and documentaries on the IFE, or even play games. The screen, as mentioned earlier, is sharp, fast, and easy to use. Unfortunately, my screen had a significant scratch. You can also easily track your location during the flight using the moving maps feature.

Conclusion

I have now flown with KLM in their Premium Comfort cabin several times, and I must say that it has become one of my favorite cabins. The relatively small cabin features pleasant and comfortable seats. The meals are very good, although for meals that have only one option, it would be great if there were completely vegetarian alternatives. KLM could choose to serve meat or fish in a separate dish.

Despite the cabin being very comfortable, I think KLM should leave their cabin cleaner. When I arrived at my seat, there were still food residues in various places. After reporting this, they cleaned it, but it should have been done thoroughly beforehand.

All in all, KLM's Premium Comfort is a pleasant cabin between Economy and Business Class.
