This review of KLM Premium Comfort Class (Premium Economy) was written by our good friend and InsideFlyer Netherlands blogger Marco.
After four fantastic weeks travelling around North and South America, it was time to head home. We opted for KLM Premium Comfort Class – the newest cabin of the Dutch company. Initially, the plan was to travel back to Europe via Dallas, but we later adjusted the return trip to Amsterdam from Mexico City.
In total, the flights for the whole trip cost me € 1,510 (~£1,260) and included the following:
- Antwerp – Amsterdam: Economy by Thalys (train)
- Amsterdam – New York JFK: Premium Select with Delta Air Lines.
- New York JFK – Miami: Economy Comfort+ with Delta Air Lines
- Mexico City – Amsterdam: Premium Comfort with KLM
- Amsterdam – Antwerp: Economy in Thalys.
I credited the flights to KLM’s Flying Blue loyalty program and earned 56 XP (elite status points) and 10,758 redeemable miles.

Check-in and Security
It was raining cats and dogs when we left the Sofitel Mexico City Reforma. At first, it was also a bit difficult to book a taxi, but eventually, we succeeded. The distance between the city and the airport was short, but it took us quite a long time. When it rains in Mexico city, keep in mind that it will take you much longer to get out of the city.
Upon arrival at the airport we were got out at Terminal 1. Baggage drop-off is almost right at the door. Although the queue looked quite busy, it only took about 10 minutes for us to hand over our bags.
With our boarding passes in hand, we first walked to the American Express Centurion lounge (landside). It was very quiet in this lounge and we enjoyed a tasty snack and drink.
After visiting the lounge, it was time to head through security. From the Amex lounge, it takes about 10 minutes to walk. Security was quiet and only took a few minutes.
Another 10 minute walk and we were at Gate 31, where the Salon VIP lounge can also be found.
Boarding
The terminal is somewhat small and outdated. In some corridors it was crowded and narrow and that does not make for a pleasant flow. Despite that, the boarding zones are well indicated. An employee also came to check that everyone was in the right place.
Boarding was delayed by about 15 minutes. As I was travelling in the Premium Comfort cabin I boarded via zone 2.
Once aboard the aircraft, I was greeted in a friendly manner and quickly arrived at seat 14A.
KLM Premium Comfort Cabin
This was my first time in Premium Comfort on one of KLM’s Boeing 787-9 aircraft.
The big difference between the Premium Comfort cabins on the Boeing 787-10 and the 787-9 is that the cabin is one row smaller. In total there are 7 seats less in the Premium Comfort cabin on the 787-9. The seats are in a 2-3-2 configuration with a total of three rows. This time we are sitting in row 14 in seats A & C.
Above the seats are luggage bins. There is ample space for the luggage you are allowed to take on board. Two pieces of hand luggage and an accessory are included in your ticket as standard.
Behind Premium Comfort you will find the Economy cabin, where the first rows have more legroom (Economy Comfort).
KLM Premium Comfort seat on the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner
The seats in Premium Comfort have a width of 18.5″. The use of colour in the seat and cabin has also been well thought out. The lighting can also simulate day and night.
The cabin is screened off at the front and back for optimum privacy. The seats have a recline of 8” and a pitch of 38”. I myself am not bothered by it that much, but the back of the seat in front of you (in rows 12 and 14) moves back when reclined, which can result in less space.
The seat is great and offers good comfort for this flight of about 10 hours. A movable headrest helps.
Each passenger also receives a pillow and blanket, the same as in the airline’s World Business Class.
For some extra lighting you can use the reading lamp in the chair, but there is also a light above you.
Every passenger has access to KLM content in the inflight entertainment system in the backrest in front of you (row 12 & 14). In row 11 in the Boeing 787-9 you will find the IFE in the middle console. The screen is 13.3” large, has a clear image and works quickly.
Finally, there are a few charging and storage options. These are mainly found in the center console of the seat. There is room for a bottle of water in a special holder. You can also store other small items. KLM provides each passenger with a headset that you can also find in the center console. USB-C and USB-A charging ports are available.
There are a number of buttons that can adjust the seat and under the window you will find a button that can dim the window.
Premium Comfort
The seats in this premium cabin of KLM are wonderful. KLM has thought carefully about the seat and in my opinion it is a great product! The comfort is fine and that is due to a number of things. As well as relatively decent cushioning, there is a movable headrest and a reasonable amount of recline. There is also a footrest and a movable leg rest, so you can lie up a bit.
Depending on the temperature on board, the blanket you receive is a useful addition.
Passengers in this cabin will also receive an amenity kit, which includes a pen, eye mask, toothbrush, toothpaste, and earplugs.
It is possible to fold down the armrest of the aisle seat. This makes it a bit easier to get in and out of your seat, or simply have a bit more room to move around. In the armrest you will also find a fold-out table. The surface of the table is large enough to place a laptop or tablet on. You can easily slide the table away from you or towards you.
Toilets can be found in the economy cabin. These are located in the middle of the economy cabin and at the back of the cabin.
Wifi & IFE
There were three Wifi packages available on the flight. A free Message package for the entire flight, where you could only send messages via apps like WhatsApp. The other two packages could be purchased with Miles or a debit card. The first was €8 for one hour of internet, the second cost €18 for surfing the entire flight.
The inflight entertainment system was well stocked for this flight. Both with newly released films and plenty of classics. There was also a reasonable range of music, games and TV programmes available.
Service, menu and meals during the flight
The crew on board was very attentive, friendly and certainly up for a chat. After the safety announcements and video had been shown it was time for take off.
During this 10-hour flight, KLM offered its customers various services. First the crew served a welcome drink and some salted nuts. I chose a glass of sparkling water and the Bols Espresso Martini.
Within an hour of take-off, the cabin crew served the main meals. The menu included both meat and vegetarian dishes. Unfortunately, the salad contained ham, so I skipped it. The vegetarian main course with ricotta ravioli and artichoke tasted delicious! There was also a small selection of cheese.
You can choose from various drinks with your meal. These are also listed on the menu card that you receive. I chose a glass of cava and a glass of sparkling water.
KLM serves cups of Häagen-Dazs ice cream – perfect to enjoy with a film.
After this, it was time to close my eyes. I managed to sleep well for at least half of the flight. After waking up I felt like having a small snack and something to drink. You can get this yourself in the galley at the back of the plane. There is a snack box and various drinks are also available. If you want coffee or tea, feel free to ask the crew who are present there.
About half an hour before we landed at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, breakfast was served. It consisted of a large bowl of Greek yoghurt with fruit and granola. A small warm quiche, bread roll, spreadable cheese and jam were also available. With breakfast I chose a nice cup of tea and some water.
Not much later it was time to clean up and we landed on Dutch soil shortly afterwards.
