American Express almost always has plenty of statement credit offers available for cardholders. Recently, there have been even more than usual, particularly for accommodation. Many of these are excellent, but I spotted one on my (free) British Airways Amex yesterday that is a bit of a head-scratcher:

Getting £200 back on £200 spend sounds like a great deal, but Onefinestay requires 3-night minimum bookings and its properties tend to be quite pricey. For example, the cheapest place I can see in London for a long weekend next month is over £900 in total.

What’s weird though?

The odd thing about this offer is that I can only see it on my free British Airways Amex – not my Gold or Platinum Amex cards.

Amex charges £575 per year for the Platinum Card, and one of the vaunted benefits is a £150 ($200) rebate on Onefinestay bookings:

Admittedly, that offer applies to multiple bookings, but it still doesn’t really seem ‘right’ to offer a bigger discount to cardholders who have a free card than to those who pay a substantial annual fee. Given the fact that many cardholders are currently thinking very carefully about whether to keep/renew Platinum cards due to COVID-19 making many of the usual benefits redundant, it seems particularly unwise…
