One of my favourite Amex promotions has returned – it could get you up to £50 in “free money“. American Express cardholders can now register their card(s) for the Shop Small promotion.

The promotion will run from 7-22 December 2019. In principle, it is pretty simple – spend more than £10 at a participating merchant and receive a £5 statement credit. You can only receive one £5 credit per merchant per card. So if you have the offer on two of your Amex cards, you can get the credit twice.

In past years, there was no limit to the statement credits. If you spent £10+ at 100 participating shops, you would have received a £500 credit. This year, Amex has changed the rules. You can get the £5 credit 10 times per card (ie £50 in total).

The only tricky part is that not all participating ‘small shops’ display the ‘Amex Small Shops’ sticker on their door. But you can use this handy little tool to determine which merchants are participating. It is an interactive map.

The fun part is of course that some pubs are participating merchants. So getting £5 back on £10+ spend is a nice little treat!

How to register for the Shop Small discount

If you have an American Express card issued directly by American Express (Gold/Platinum, SPG, BA/BAPP etc), log in to your American Express online account, click on the “offers” tab and then click on “save to card” when you see the Shop Small discount.

Bottom Line

Amex Shop Small has been my favourite promotion ever since I received my first Amex. It is also a nice reminder to support smaller, independent merchants, and what could beat triggering the discount by inviting a mate for a pint in your local participating pub?

Terms

• This promotion is intended for UK Cardmembers only.
• Offer only applies to spend made in Great British Pound (GBP) on the Card to which the offer is saved,including an American Express Card loaded into a mobile payment wallet.
• Offer does not apply to spend on other Cards you might hold and is only valid for transactions made at small businesses that are eligible to participate in Shop Small.
• One £5 statement credit per UK Card per merchant will be given up to 10 times.
• Offer only available to Cardmembers who save the offer to their Card.
• Credit should appear on your billing statement within 5 days from qualifying spend. If you do not receive your credit within 30 days from 22/12/2019 please contact our Customer Service team online or by calling the number on the back of your Card.
• Offer excludes Lloyds Bank, Corporate and Pre-Paid Cards.
• Offer excludes orders made on finance.
• For lodging, travel or car rental you must book and pay within the offer period to receive the statement credit.
• Offer is only intended for the targeted recipient of this offer.
• Spend must be billed to your Card account by 22/12/2019 to be eligible for this offer. If eligible merchant does not charge your Card during this period, you may not be eligible for this offer.
• An awarded credit may be reversed if a qualifying transaction is refunded or cancelled. Any misuse, as reasonably determined by us, relating to your redemption of Amex Offers or any previous Amex Offers and promotions may result in an awarded credit being reversed, and ineligibility from future Amex Offers and other promotions. This reversal may take place up to a maximum of 180 days after the offer campaign end date. Please note that if an awarded credit is reversed after you have paid your bill you may be returned to a negative balance.
