The Hotel Point to Avios Conversion Bonus is Back…

A couple of times per year we usually get a promotion whereby British Airways Executive Club will add a bonus on conversions of hotel points to Avios. The final offer for 2019 is now here. Between now and 2 December, 2019, British Airways Executive Club is offering a 35% bonus when converting hotel points to Avios.

These are the hotel programmes that qualify for the bonus and the minimum conversions required:

  • Radisson Rewards  (MIN 2,000)
  • Best Western (MIN 5,000)
  • Melia Rewards (MIN 100)
  • IHG Rewards Club (MIN 10,000)
  • Marriott Bonvoy (MIN 9,000)
  • Shangri-La Golden Circle (MIN 2,500)

You can find details of this promotion on the BA website by clicking here.

It is important to remember that, most of the time, it doesn’t make sense to convert hotel points into Avios. The major hotel chains prefer you to spend those points on a hotel room night that almost certainly would be empty – rather than generate a cost to them from buying miles from the airline.

Of course, if you have a handful of hotel points that are close to expiring, then by all means take this opportunity to convert them to Avios.

It’s also worth pointing out that the bonus only applies to conversions of existing points. If you change your earning preference from “points” to “miles” for any upcoming hotel stays, you won’t actually earn a bonus on the stay-based miles you’d earn.

I cannot see anything in the T&Cs that excludes Marriott Bonvoy Travel Packages. I wrote about them recently. Therefore, you would receive 135,000 Avios if you book the larger Travel Package.

You might be wondering about Hilton, Hyatt and Accor. You do NOT receive the 35% bonus with conversions from these chains.

Conclusion

This promotion is essentially targeted at those Executive Club members who don’t quite understand the value of their hotel points. But for many InsideFlyer readers, this promotion is something you will pay relatively little attention to, unless you have some expiring hotel points to get rid of…
