One of the widely advertised benefits of the American Express Platinum card is airline lounge access. According to the Amex website, The Platinum Card will get you “Complimentary access to over 1,000 airport lounges across more than 120 countries worldwide.” This usually works via Priority Pass. You can also access Delta lounges by flashing your Amex Plat.
In 2017, Lufthansa announced that it would temporarily allow Amex Platinum cardholders to access selected lounges at its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich. The benefit was originally due to end on 31 May 2018 but has been extended. If you hold an Amex Platinum or an Amex Platinum Supplementary Card, you can now access selected Lufthansa lounges until 31 October 2019. You must be flying with Lufthansa, SWISS or Austrian. Here are the details:
- Amex Platinum cardholders travelling in economy class can access the Lufthansa Business Lounge
- Amex Platinum cardholders travelling in business class may access the Lufthansa Senator Lounge
- Amex Centurion cardholders can access the Lufthansa First Class Lounge irrespective of class of travel
Unfortunately this only applies to Lufthansa lounges at Munich Terminal 2 (satellite area), and Frankfurt Terminal 1, Concourse B.
Amex Platinum and Amex Platinum supplementary cardholders get in for free. Guests may be taken in for a fee.
You can find out more on the dedicated Amex page here. Note that this is the Amex US page. Although I couldn’t find an announcement on the Amex UK page, the offer is not restricted to the US. I took advantage just last week. Full t&c’s at the bottom.
Bottom Line
It is nice to see Amex adding benefits for its Platinum cardholders. After all, the card comes with a hefty annual fee of £450. I don’t have status with Lufthansa, so being able to access its lounges when transiting through Frankfurt and Munich is a welcome perk. Let’s hope the partnership will be extended past October 2019, and that more lounges will be added. It is a shame that the partnership currently only applies to some lounges in Frankfurt and Munich.
