Until 22nd May 2018, you can get a 20% Railcard discount when purchasing a ‘Family & Friends’ Railcard – meaning you’ll pay £24 rather than £30.
To get the 20% Railcard discount, all you need to do is enter the code FMH20 in the ‘promotional codes’ box when making your purchase:
Why do I want a Family & Friends Railcard?
Basically, if you ever take the train and travel with a child, it can save you (and anyone else you’re travelling with) a small fortune! I love mine.
“With a Family & Friends Railcard you’ll enjoy 1/3 off rail fares for up to 4 adults and 60% off for up to 4 kids between 5 and 15″.
That’s right – even if you are travelling with just one kid, you can get 30% off for yourself and three other adults, as well as 60% off for your child. When me and my son are visiting somewhere with family or going for a day out with friends, I can book the tickets and save everyone a load of cash!
Details
Up to four adults and four children can travel on the same card and receive the savings. You don’t need to be related either, so it’s great for big fun days out.
Two adults can be named as cardholders on your Family and Friends Railcard. You don’t need to travel together, but you do need to be travelling with at least one child between the ages of 5 and 15 to be eligible for the discount.
Kids under 5 travel completely free. Each adult can have up to two ‘under 5s’ with them. But if there’s only one child in the group and they’re under 5, you’ll need to buy them a child ticket to be eligible for the Family & Friends discount. And remember that all child fares are subject to a £1 minimum fare.
If your little one turns 16 before your 1-year Family & Friends Railcard runs out, they can still travel at the discounted child fare for as long as the card is still valid.
Conclusion
I think we probably save more money each year using our Railcard than from any other travel discount. There are a few restrictions on what sort of tickets you can book / when you can travel / etc – see the full list here – but there’s nothing particularly limiting.
The 20% Railcard discount just makes a great deal even better!
