IHG Rewards Club has announced in a press release that it is “enhancing” its PointBreaks promotion because…
IHG® Rewards Club members love the PointBreaks promotion, and they’ve asked us to make it available in more hotels and more locations.
Although this statement is unquestionably true, we didn’t really mean that we wanted IHG to triple the points cost per night. Sigh… Starting with the soon-to-be-released list that will be made available on Monday, 29 January, 2018, PointBreaks hotels will now be available at three different point values: 5,000, 10,000 and 15,000 points per night.
Here is IHG’s sneak preview of the 200+ properties that will be featured:
Holiday Inn® Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie (Malaysia) (5,000 points)
InterContinental® Nairobi (Kenya) (10,000 points)
Holiday Inn® San Antonio Northwest (US) (10,000 points)
InterContinental® Cali (Colombia) (10,000 points)
Holiday Inn Express® London – Newbury Park (UK) (10,000 points)
InterContinental® Sao Paolo (Brazil) (15,000 points)
Holiday Inn® Helsinki City Centre (Finland) (15,000 points)
Crowne Plaza Berlin – Potsdamer Platz (Germany) (15,000 points)
The full list will be unveiled at some point today, with the promotional rates going live at 17:00 GMT on Monday, 29 January, 2018. The discounted rates will be available for reward nights between 29 January and 30 April 30, 2018. Once bookable, you will be able to find the full list by clicking here.
This change has the potential to be positive. After all, 15,000 points for a nice Intercontinental or Crowne Plaza is still a bargain. (although none of the preview hotels appeal to me personally) But unless we actually see more attractive hotels than has been the case in recent years, this change will simply be viewed as a massive devaluation…
