Andrew Tucker says
Maybe it’s just me, but I never understand all the hype that revolves around point breaks. Locations and hotel calibre tend to be meagre at best in my opinion.
Joe Deeney says
The lists certainly used to be a lot more exciting, but it’s still tremendous value if you spot one that works for you. For example, I took my parents on a pre-Christmas trip to Hamburg for 3 nights and got 2 rooms at the (genuinely quite decent) Holiday inn Express there for 30,000 Points in total – that’s a heck of a value, when you consider how easy/cheap it can still be to pick up IHG Points. Even the not great seeming UK ones can work out well sometimes – I needed to book a few rooms in Manchester last year when there absolutely nothing under £100 anywhere near the centre, but managed to get a Holiday Inn a 10 minute taxi/bus ride away on PointBreaks.
Ok, those examples aren’t exactly Bora Bora – but they were trips where I’d’ve otherwise had to pay hard cash (or many more Points), so the ‘real’ saving was significant. When you factor cost of earning against the value you can get from PointBreaks, it’s still one of the most generous regular promos around.
The caveat is obviously that there does need to either be somewhere you’re going anyway or somewhere you fancy on the list. This time I haven’t really seen anything works for me personally I don’t think.
Andrew Tucker says
I hear what you’re saying Joe. Like with all these things, if it works for you then great.
For a good while I followed the hype hoping to find something, but it never delivered for me – and my experience of holiday Inn (and to some lesser extent crowne plaza) has not been impressive.
And so from thereon, I’ve stuck with accor (on this websites recommendation) and hotels.com which I find gives me wider choice- and happy Mondays excellent value.
Joe Deeney says
Yeah, you know I love Happy Mondays! (in fact I should really start lobbying them to expand it outside the UK – that would brilliant!). As with all ‘travel hackery’, I get best results from having as broad a toolkit as possible at my disposal in order to take advantage of the various sweetspots in each programme. As you say, PointBreaks can save you a bundle when it works, but I certainly wouldn’t rely on there being something good/usable every time.
Craig Sowerby says
Funny you mention Bora Bora. The highlight of Point Breaks for me was way back in Autumn 2013 when the Intercontinental Tahiti made the PB list.
I’ve made use of PB a few times since. But sometimes even when I’m near a PB hotel I don’t bother because IHG doesn’t do elite status recognition well. (i.e. why go to HIX Hamburg when there’s a Park Hyatt in town and I can get a suite!)
Joe Deeney says
Ah yes, the good old days… What was the IC Tahiti like?
I know what you mean, but in the Hamburg example there’s an easy answer: I’m a Yorkshireman. Park Hyatt would’ve cost about £1200 total (and I don’t have status with Hyatt actually) – I’d rather spend the 30k IHG Points.
(Before anyone accuses me of being a total miser, I was also treating them to the Marriott County Hall on the way back too!)
Craig Sowerby says
Sadly I never made it to the IC Tahiti, but it sure looked good.
So, where does Yorkshire sit in the Scotland / Catalonia, etc, tight with wallet scale? 😀
Status does make a huge difference for me. A good executive lounge can mean spending nothing on food, whilst staying at a HI/CP means you’re paying for food and drink.
Joe Deeney says
Yorkshire is top of the league at absolutely everything obviously, we just don’t like to brag. When you see our sports teams being rubbish etc, it’s actually just us being polite. : )
Status is an interesting one – I was having a chat with new contributor Dr Redeye the other day and he takes the contrary view very firmly. I’m somewhere in the middle, in that I definitely enjoy having status and do gain real value from things like flexible check-in/out, but I don’t really care that much about upgrades or lounge access a lot of the time these days. It was a lot of fun when I started ‘travel hacking’ (and is still nice, of course), but the reality is that most of my stays are in cities where I want to be out and about in bars and restaurants rather than in the club lounge. I think we might run a pro hotel loyalty post by you and and an anti response from Dr Redeye sometime soon, if you fancy the challenge?
Naomi Charlton says
Hi guys, Points Breaks worked out really well for us this time. My son does a lot of Modern Pentathlon competitions in the Birmingham area & we often use the Holiday Inn Walsall (M6 J10) as it is only 10,000 points per night & has plenty family rooms? With Points Breaks though we were able to switch to the Great Barr Holiday Inn (M6 J7) @5,000 points per night therefore saving a total of 15.000 points over the 3 nights we already had booked in!! xxxxx
Joe Deeney says
Fantastic Naomi – I love it when PointBreaks works for something I’ve already booked!
Naomi Charlton says
I have to be honest – I felt quite pleased with myself after I had changed the booking!! I will also take the opportunity to say a massive thx to Inside Flyer for all the incredibly helpful ‘travel hacking’ information you provide, I think it’s an absolutely fantastic service & would recommend to anyone…..xxxxx
Joe Deeney says
Thanks Naomi! – Our absolute pleasure!!
