The American Express Gold card is, in my view, the single best value “travel hack” credit card out there. I won’t bore you with the details of why, as I’ve already done so. Suffice to say that a combination of it being free for the first year, a generous points bonus and some tasty little perks (including 2 x free airport lounge entry) make it an enticing package.
The points you earn with the Amex Gold are of course the wonderfully flexible Membership Rewards points, convertible into an enormous number of frequent flyer and hotel loyalty schemes. Their versatility gives them obvious additional value, and so they are consistently a “loyalty currency” I am on the look out for – they can become pretty much whatever other loyalty currency you want them to be, when you need it.
The current offer
Via a email campaign over the past couple of days, Amex has been encouraging cardholders to add a supplementary card to their account by offering 3,000 bonus Membership Rewards points as a supplementary cardholder. That’s simply someone who holds another card that is charged to your main account.
The first supplementary card on your account is complimentary and if you apply by 31 March 2017, you’ll earn 3,000 Membership Rewards points for the first approved supplementary card.
Now I am not sure if this offer applies to everyone or just those targeted by the email campaign. I suggest that you check your emails and if you have not been targeted, you give Amex a call to see if they’ll award you the points.

Why simply not refer a person to get their own card (free in the first year) and get 9K points?
Tom Sumner says
Well you of course can, but this is a very easy route to 3K points where that’s not an option (e.g. for whatever reason they wouldn’t qualify for the card, or they already have it)

This is not limited to Gold card holders – I received a similar email today, offering 3000 Avios for adding a supplementary card holder to my BA PP Amex account.

Cheers Kevin!

Comments on Head For Points suggests that not everyone will have got this. However, Platinum Chargecard looks to be 5k, Gold Chargecard 3k, BA Premium Creditcard 3k, Nectar 1k, if you’ve been targetted!

Very interesting – I wish there was something for standard BA or Amex Plat though! That said, I think I got about 50k Points last year from a Plat supplementary offer so can’t get too upset…
