One of the nice elements of Virgin Atlantic Flying Club’s “Miles Booster” is that it can be used for both paid and reward flights. When a bonus is available – such as the current 30% offer – this can be a cost-effective way of paying for your next flight whilst enjoying the rewards of prior efforts to collect Virgin Atlantic miles.  This is especially true since back in 2016 Flying Club reduced the number of miles needed for a reward flight in Economy class.

Here’s what I mean…

A Reward Flight to the Caribbean on Off-Peak Dates

If you fancy a winter getaway to the Caribbean, you could choose to book a reward flight in Economy that would cost you 20,000 Virgin miles + nearly £270.

I chose Barbados for the simple reason that it is one of the examples used by Flying Club to demonstrate the potential of Miles Booster.

Of course if you choose to book a reward flight to Barbados during November (or already have one booked), you can choose the Miles Booster option and receive a 30% bonus on double the miles flown. You would spend £168.40 and receive 21,892 miles (16,840 x 130%).

The total, net cost of your reward flights would be:

    • £269.86 in taxes and surcharges
    • £168.40 for Miles Booster
    • 20,000 miles spent
    • 21,892 miles received after your flight
  • i.e. £438.26 spent and 1,892 miles earned

Comparing to a Paid Ticket in Economy Classic (Equivalent to a Reward Ticket)

For what it’s worth, here’s what you would pay for a standard paid flight on these dates.

An Economy Class return ticket to Barbados would earn 50% of the 8,420 miles flown –> 4,210 miles.  But you’d need to pay £587.86 for your ticket.

The Bottom Line

I know it takes more effort, and you must have 20,000 miles (per person) in your Flying Club account to start off. But by combining a Virgin Atlantic reward flight with Miles Booster you can save £££ and still add to your mileage balance.
