Is There an Extra Surprise in Your Virgin Atlantic Account?

Travel hackers in the UK are sadly aware that Tesco, under new management, has cut back drastically on the opportunities to earn bonus Clubcard Points, which were then spent ANYWHERE other than Tesco for outsized value.

Perhaps this restraint has hit the bottom line harder than Tesco hoped (or more likely its main partners), as an Avios conversion bonus has recently returned. You can read about it by clicking here.

The other main travel hack available from Tesco is the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club 1,000 mile “opt-in” bonus. Most quarters you can:

  • Step One, sign up for Auto Opt-In
  • Step Two, wait for 1,000 miles to post to your Virgin Atlantic Flying Club account
  • Step Three, turn OFF Auto Opt-In (make sure to do this well ahead of the next statement)

Rinse and repeat until somebody decides to stop it…

The opt-in bonuses have been reaching Virgin Atlantic accounts this week, so it’s time to set your Tesco Clubcard account back to “vouchers”.

Normally I know enough to keep my mouth (and keyboard) shut when an unexpected bonus comes along, but I decided to share this anyhow so that readers can see the potential benefits of playing this little game…  😉

Enjoy your free miles, and hopefully this offer will come back again at the next Clubcard statement cycle in November.

Now we have the bonus, is it fine to turn off auto convert so vouchers do not go over?
They never take back the bonus do they if you turn off before converting?

I rarely get the 1000 miles – last time was Feb. Do you need to have done an auto conversion to Virgin to trigger the bonus for that quarter? I rarely shop at Tesco – mainly due to location – so tend to struggle to get the £2.50 min conversion.

At the time of each statement, you need to have your account set to vouchers, not auto-convert. Then you set your account to auto-convert for a few weeks mid-cycle. Then once you’ve received your miles you reset your account back to vouchers so that you receive vouchers at the next statement.

You don’t ever need to have £2.50. I receive the miles every time even though I only earn maybe 50 Clubcard points per year during my occasional trips to London…
