The Avios gods may have recently taken away with one hand, but they’ve given us back a little something with the other – new Avios redemptions, thanks to Cathay Pacific’s new European routes.

The Hong Kong based airline has announced three new European destinations – Brussels, Copenhagen and Dublin – with flights commencing on 27th March 2018, 2nd May 2018 and 2nd June 2018, respectively.

What’s great about all the new destinations for anyone wanting to use Avios to fly with Cathay Pacific, is that they are cheap and easy to get to from most parts of the UK, either using low cost carriers or Avios. Getting to Dublin Airport from where I live in Yorkshire, for example, is just as easy as it is for me to get to Heathrow.

Avios availability for Cathay flights to/from the UK is usually pretty good, but it has noticeably tightened over the last couple of years, so it’s definitely good to have more options.

All three routes are slated to be served by Cathay’s 3-Class A350-900s, with the following layouts:

• 38 Business Class Seats in a 1-2-1 configuration
• 28 Premium Economy Seats 2-4-2 configuration
• 214 Economy Seats in a 3-3-3 configuration

The flights are already loaded and bookable using Avios, and as you would expect with new routes, availability is wide open. That said, despite the plan to fly planes with a Premium Economy cabin, I could only actually see Economy and Business Class availability when I was searching.

Economy is 30,000 Avios each way and Business Class is 90,000.

There are no ‘surcharges’ and taxes are minimal at around £30 from Dublin for example.

If 90,000 Avios seems like a lot of Miles for a one-way flight in Business Class (it is), consider collecting Alaska Mileage Plan Miles, which allow you to book Cathay Pacific Business Class between Europe and Hong Kong for just 42,500 Miles one-way!
