BA Booking System Down Today ( + Dozens of Other Airlines Affected Too)

It’s not been a great week for the airlines, with Ryanair having all sorts of bother, and dozens of airlines (including British Airways) now experiencing difficulties with their booking and check-in systems.

When I wanted to check something on the BA site a little earlier, this is as far as I could get:

Shortly afterwards, BA put out a statement explaining what was going on:

Along with many other airlines, we are experiencing technical issues with our online booking and reservations systems. We are sorry for the issues customers are experiencing.

Our flights today are unaffected and are operating as normal.

The issues are as a result of a technical matter with a third party systems provider, Amadeus, which supplies more than 100 airlines with a variety of IT systems.

We are speaking with Amadeus, who are working very hard to resolve the matter as quickly as possible.

If you are flying today and are unable to check in online, you can check in at the airport. For flights tomorrow, please revisit our website later and try to check in online.

If you wish to make a new booking or alter an existing booking on our website or via one of our call centres, please revisit our website or contact us later on.

We are aiming to have all parts of our website and reservations systems available as soon as possible.

Amadeus provides the booking infrastructure for dozens of other airlines too, including Iberia, Finnair, Qantas and Lufthansa, so this is a big deal and has been causing confusion and delays at airports across the world.

The core issues should largely have been resolved by now, according to a statement from Amadeus, who said they “confirm that our systems are recovered and are now functioning normally“.

If you are travelling today though, I would still anticipate the possibility of delays caused by knock on effects from the earlier outage – it might be sensible to give yourself a little more time at the airport if you can.

Bottom line

Another day, another air travel screw up. To be fair to Amadeus, they do seem to have resolved the problem pretty quickly at least (hopefully anyway!).

Were your travel plans affected by the outage?

I know that this is not BA’s fault but as their involved in this it’s not looking good for them again, it’s like opening an old wound!
