Coming quickly on the heels of the flash sale of Avios direct from Iberia Plus, but which involved buying 100,000 Avios to obtain the best price, the Iberia Plus / Groupon offer has returned yet again. You’re going to need some Spanish language skills – or a web browser that can translate for you. But you should be able to purchase some Avios at a decent price. The offer comes from the Spanish version of Groupon and the Avios are sent to an Iberia Plus account.

It is easy enough to sign up for a Spanish Groupon account – if not resident in Spain you can enter any hotel (or similar) and take advantage of the offer. The price per Avios jumps around a bit:

• 2,000 Avios for 19 euros (0.95 euro cents apiece)
• 4,000 Avios for 59 euros (1.48 euro cents apiece)
• 8,000 Avios for 99 euros (1.24 euro cents apiece)
• 15,000 Avios for 189 euros (1.26 euro cents apiece)
• 20,000 Avios for 249 euros (1.25 euro cents apiece)
• 34,000 Avios for 429 euros (1.26 euro cents apiece)

You are allowed to buy 1 of the 2,000 Avios packs, 3 of the 34,000 Avios packs and 5 of the other packs. In theory, you could buy up to 200,000 Avios in total.

At the time of writing, the 2,000 Avios packs are showing as “sold out”, but according to Spanish blogger Ultima Llamada this is due to a glitch that was allowing people to buy multiple packs of 2,000 Avios. Hopefully the 2,000 Avios pack will return once Groupon’s IT guys have fixed the glitch…

You want to go to the Iberia website and set your country settings to Spain. Then you want to visit the IberiaPluStore. (which works exactly like your usual cashback or airline shopping portals) There you will find Groupon as one of the options, offering 10 Avios per euro spent (at the time of writing). Once in Groupon, you need to set your city to Madrid and search for Avios. Confusing? Perhaps this isn’t a travel hack for your grandmother… but it’s still free extra Avios…

So… if you buy a 8,000 Avios pack, you will also earn 990 Avios extra via the IberiaPluStore. 8,990 Avios for 99 euros (£86) is slightly less than 1p per Avios.

As a Spanish speaker and resident, this deal is simple enough for me to access. I understand that non-Spanish residents had some issues in earlier iterations of the promotion, but lately have had no problems with the crediting of their Avios. The 2,000 Avios pack is certainly cheap enough to give it a go…
