Star Alliance is celebrating its 20th Birthday with a cracking competition – Mileage Millionaire!

There are now 28 Star Alliance member airlines with 21 loyalty programmes between them, and each loyalty programme is offering 1 lucky winner 1 MILLION MILES (or equivalent).

How to enter

Entries must be submitted by 31st July 2017

The competition website states:

“You can enter the competition in just four easy steps. First use our photo app to upload your favourite cultural experience, tell us where it was, what it was that made it so special and let us know how we can reach you. The winners will be announced on September 28, 2017.

Star Alliance defines a cultural experience as, ” your personal interaction with practices, habits, traditions and customs of the place you have visited, and the impact they had on you and your perception of them”.

Note that you actually have to upload a photo of yourself, as well as your cultural experience photo.

Entries will be judged taking into account the following considerations:

  1. How good was the visual quality of the image submitted?
  2. How effectively did the entire entry (text + visual) accentuate and bring forward the special and unique attributes of a cultural experience and the connection of people and cultures?
  3. How original and creative were the submitted materials?

Good competition?

Fantastic, in my opinion.

It only takes a couple of minutes to enter and a million Miles could get you a lot of travel. You can check out the specific prizes being offered by each loyalty programme here – for example, SAS is actually offering 4 round-the-world Business Class tickets, rather than Miles.

You can only enter once, regardless of how many Star Alliance programmes you are a member of. I would suggest that your chances of winning are probably considerably higher with the lesser known programmes like TAP Portugal Victoria, South Africa Airways Voyager, Ethiopian Sheba Miles, Avianca Brazil Amigo, etc, than with United MileagePlus or Miles & More.

What you would then do with a million Sheba Miles, I’m not entirely sure – but I imagine it would be a nice problem to have!

Mileage Millionaire Bottom line

A million Miles is really good prize – and there’s 21 on offer (or equivalent). With some of the lesser known programmes, your chances of winning might not be that bad…

Hi – thanks for pointing out the competition. Do you have any recommendations for which airline to choose for your prize? I love Singapore airlines however my understanding is that unlike Avios and BAEC they will expire after a certain period of time regardless of any account activity. Given that major downside who would you recommend I assign as my chose airline? Thanks for your help

If mileage expiry is your only concern, you should consider Avianca Lifemiles or United Mileage Plus since basic activity once in awhile is enough to keep the miles alive.

With a million miles though, I would probably want to have Singapore Krisflyer miles, and fly around in a First Class suite until the million miles were gone. Similar would be ANA, spending the miles on Etihad First Class…
