At the very top of my list of best value Avios redemptions is redeeming off-peak on Iberia (through Iberia Plus). Craig posted earlier today that, until 11th April, Iberia is offering a 25% Avios discount on redemptions to/from all destinations, which makes Iberia redemptions even better value!

The award flights must take place between now and 15 June 2017 or between 1 October and 15 December 2017 to get the 25% discount.

This is such a great deal that I thought it was worth taking the time to flag up some specific examples. First up though, here’s the standard Iberia Award Chart:

Note the off peak Business Class prices for Band 5 and Band 6 are particularly good value – and are the key reason why I consider Iberia Plus to offer some of the best value Avios redemptions around (Iberia off peak calendar).

Those Bands include some fantastic destinations, for example:

Band 5: Boston, Chicago, New York, San Juan.

Band 6: Bogota, Cali, Caracas, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guayaquil, Lima, Los Angeles, Medellin, Mexico City, Miami, Panama, Quito, Rio de Janeiro, San Jose (Costa Rica), Santo Domingo, Sao Paulo.

With the 25% discount, all the Band 5 cities are just 25,500 Avios in Business Class each way (+ ~£100 in tax/fees)!

Economy (Blue Class) would require 12,750 Avios.

Band 6 cities are 31,875 in Business Class each way (+ ~£100 in tax/fees)!

Economy (Blue Class) would require 15,938 Avios

You can take a look at all Iberia destinations listed by Category here (in Spanish). Knock 25% off the off-peak prices to see what the price would be during the current award sale.

Examples:

Madrid-Chicago Iberia Business Class: 25,500 Avios + £102 one way:

Whereas flying British Airways from London to Chicago in Club World (Business Class) off peak would require 50,000 Avios + £363 one way:

That’s almost twice as many Avios and 3.5 times the cash requirement too!

Madrid – Rio de Janeiro Iberia Business Class: 31,900 Avios + £75 one way:

Whereas flying British Airways from London to Rio in Club World (Business Class) off peak would require a staggering 75,000 Avios + £366.

That’s more than double the number of Avios, and almost 5x the cash requirement!

Remember – these comparisons are against BA off-peak. Peak BA dates would require an additional 10,000 Avios or 15,000 Avios, respectively.

In case you think this is just BA overcharging these days and the Iberia deals aren’t that great compared to other major airline award charts, it’s worth pointing out that American Airlines charges 57,500 AA Miles between Europe and North America and 87,500 AA Miles between Europe and South America, one way in Business Class. United Airlines (etc) charge very similar amounts too.

In other words, this is an absolutely brilliant deal – especially given how relatively easy it is to collect Avios compared to other airline miles in the UK.

How to transfer your Avios to Iberia Plus

Essentially, your Iberia Plus account needs to have been open for at least 90 days and must show at least one transaction (earning or transferring any Avios will do). For full details, have a read of our extensive guide here.

Bottom line

25% off what are already some of the very best value Avios redemptions available today, is an amazing offer.

People used to rave about the Aer Lingus Dublin/Shannon to Boston sweetspot (it used to be 25k Avios one-way in Business Class which was great), but this Iberia offer provides a much greater range of options.

Following a negative spiral of devaluations, it would be easy to get a little jaded with Avios, but there are still amazing opportunities if you know where to look!

Iberia Business Class is considerably better than BA’s Club World in my view too, which just makes these deals even sweeter!

This is also covered today over on HFP. Are the taxes lower than £200 when booking a return as I’m sure I’ve just read over there that someone booked 2 x RTN and only paid £300 in taxes?

We try to ensure that you’ll always hear the news here first. 🙂

Unlike BA and Virgin Atlantic, I believe that Iberia Plus charge the same amount, regardless of whether you book two one-ways or a return. You’re also free to pay in euros, sterling or dollars.

Yeah, I just used the ~£100 figure as a rough approximation. It depends on the flight from ~£60ish to a little over £100. A Return for £150 sounds fairly typical.

Could I fly from JFK to MAD to BUD in business for 25,500 avios , then back from OTP to MAD to JFK in business for 25,500 avios? Or would I need a separate award for the connection?

    • Joe Deeney says

      Hi Barry,

Like BA, Iberia charge point-to-point rather than by region, so you would have to book MAD-BUD and OTP-MAD separately, but would get 25% off the Avios for those flights too.

      Hope that helps!

How can I find the various applicable destinations that are possible from Chicago? Or is it just Madrid?
